About us

The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) funds world-class science in universities and our own research centres that increases knowledge and understanding of the natural world. The work of NERC covers the full range of atmospheric, earth, biological, terrestrial and aquatic sciences.

Research Technology Service (RTS) is a division of NERC, providing IT support, information systems and data management services across the research centres that constitute NERC.

About the role 

You will provide support and monitor the NERC firewalls and networks and you will assist in raising the security posture of the systems. You will be responsible for maintaining an efficient, reliable and secure network.

You will play an active part in the team and will be involved in multiple areas including but not limited to:

  • supporting and developing network systems 
  • specifying and installing Cisco switches and routers, project managing installation from specifying the hardware to installing and commissioning systems 
  • leading on security systems and supporting other staff as required 
  • playing an active role in handling cyber incidents; leading and mitigating any incidents
  • monitoring network systems and alerting if faults or security incidents are detected .

About you
 

You will be an experienced IT professional who is able to demonstrate an excellent record of developing and running services, together with excellent troubleshooting and communication skills.

It is essential you have experience of working with firewalls (ideally Checkpoint) and networking technologies (preferably Cisco switches and routers). Knowledge of, or experience with any of the following would be an advantage:

  • SIEM solutions
  • Multi-factor authentication
  • Vulnerability scanning
  • Wider knowledge of IT technologies, particularly Linux and virtualization.

You will be able to communicate effectively with all parties and be able to prioritize and balance conflicting demands on your time.
