Technician

Full Time

The appointment will be on UCL Grade 6. The salary range will be £24,983 to £29,799 per annum, exclusive of London Allowance.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to recruit a Technician in the Flight Test Facilities Group at the Department of Space and Climate Physics (Mullard Space Science Laboratory), University College London. The group is currently involved in testing hardware for a number of ESA space missions, including Exomars, Solar Orbiter, Euclid and Plato. The successful applicant will, in the first instance, provide support to the Euclid VIS flight hardware test campaign, as well as being responsible for the maintenance and day-to-day running of the Euclid flight test facilities and cleanrooms.  The post is for two years in the first instance and continuation is subject to grant funding.

The Mullard Space Science Laboratory is located in its own campus in the Surrey Hills, surrounded by woodland and is the UK’s largest university space research group. Space science is a discipline that demands highly innovative technologies and MSSL has an international reputation for excellence in this area. Since MSSL was established in 1966, we have participated in over 50 satellite missions with the European Space Agency, NASA, Japan, Russia, China and India, and have flown over 230 rocket experiments.

The Department is family friendly and applications would be welcome from applicants seeking part-time opportunities.

The successful applicant should hold an HNC/HND in engineering or equivalent and have experience of working in a laboratory environment. Basic understanding of laboratory vacuum systems and cleanroom protocols and good analytical skills, through a methodical approach, are also essential requirements.  It is expected that the applicant should have good interpersonal skills and proven capability to work collaboratively.
