The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) is a strategic authority working with partners to deliver a stronger West Midlands, with a focus on skills, innovation, transport, economic development and regeneration. Individual councils and Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) will still deliver services and retain their identity but on the big decisions we will have the resources to work together.

This is an exciting time for the West Midlands - the Commonwealth Games will be here in 2022, the arrival of HS2 will help make us a world class business location and a new £350m housing deal aims to deliver 215,000 new homes by 2031.

Against a backdrop of a uniquely challenging and evolving environment, we are looking for the right people to ensure we can meet the demands of delivering an ambitious agenda that aims to build a healthier, happier, better connected and more prosperous West Midlands. These truly are roles that will have an impact on the whole of our region.

We are now looking for two motivated Solicitors, Counsel or Legal Executives to join our Legal Services team, to provide focused, effective advice in relation to Commercial matters and Projects work.

Working within the Governance Team and Corporate Services Directorate, you will be confident and self-motivated, happy working both alone and as part of a team, with a strong emphasis on managing relationships within the Authority and with key external stakeholders.

The Commercial role will involve meeting the commercial and corporate requirements of the WMCA particularly in relation to contract preparation, advising on procurement and state aid legislation and providing expert legal advice in relation to commercial matters to the WMCA, its stakeholders and funders.

The Projects role will involve the provision of legal services to meet the commercial and corporate requirements of WMCA particularly in relation to major projects emerging out of the Capital Investment Programme and other WMCA regeneration schemes and initiatives.

You will work closely with a wide range of colleagues across the organisation including Midland Metro Alliance, projects, assurance, asset management, procurement, finance, legal and governance teams, providing practical, commercial and clear legal advice. You will be confident in instructing and directing external consultants and legal advisers, and used to working in a fast paced environment where tight deadlines are the norm.

Experience of working with local authorities will also be beneficial.

Some knowledge of construction law is desirable. A demonstrated track record of providing advice within or to local government or other public sector organisations will be preferred.

In return for your hard work and commitment, we will reward you with a range of competitive and attractive benefits.
