A unique role in a unique educational organisation - someone to assist our students to learn science - and more

Self Managed Learning College is Sussex's unschool based on the edge of Hove; a 21st century approach to education that prepares young people for the tests of life as opposed to a life of tests. Students (aged 9-16) decide for themselves what and how they want to learn. They are supported within a caring learning community of adults and young people. There is no fixed curriculum or standard classroom teaching.

The College is part of an educational charity, the Centre for Self Managed Learning. The Centre has an international reputation for its innovative work and the College has a local record of success - for example all students at 16 go on to college or into work. You would work with students who love to learn - as they have a free choice of what to do. You would join a supportive team of other adults helping students to learn. We call the role Learning Adviser as that is the closest to what the person will do.

THE PERSON

You must be able to work with a range of students, some of whom will do GCSEs. A core need is for assistance with biology and chemistry, but we also have an expanding interest in behavioural sciences, especially psychology.

You would need to work at least one morning per week (08.30 to 1pm) in term time (36 weeks in the year) and will also need to attend meetings to review our work. We are planning an afternoon programme (1.30 to 4.30pm) from September and the person appointed will be offered work on that programme as well.

REMUNERATION

The current rate for providing one morning per week is GBP2,823 per annum spread over 12 months. The arrangement means that learning advisers have a guaranteed fee-based income each month while benefiting from not being on PAYE i.e. no tax is deducted and each Learning Adviser makes their own arrangements with HMRC. Additional fees are paid for any agreed extra work.

To apply please send a cv to with a covering letter explaining why you would like to work with us and what you could offer our students. Closing date for applications is March 21st. First stage interviews will be from now until March 25th and final stage selection is likely to be in the week commencing March 26th. Ideally, we are looking for the successful candidate to start at the college on the 16th April.
