Handmade lampshade technicians

Based at: Workshop/factory in Portslade

Hours: preferably full-time, permanent with review after 3 months . Also looking for freelance members of staff with similar skills

About A Shade Above: A Shade Above (est 1983) is a bespoke handmade lampshade maker supplying to the Interior Design and Lighting Industries. Clients use A Shade Above because of its high quality product, knowledge and experience of Lampshade design and ability to produce exactly what they want.

There are two main departments at A Shade Above, the soft shade and the laminated shade department. The soft shade team produce stretched, pleated and gathered shades around a frame and their work is based around sewing (7 permanent members of staff plus freelancers) . The laminated lampshade team (comprising currently of 4 members of staff) essentially laminate a variety of fabrics (mainly silks) to laminating cards and attach to metal rings to create the varying shapes and sizes. A Shade Above has a very large and prestigious client base both in the UK and Internationally.

The vacancies:

Handmade lampshade technicians ( 2 required) - stretched and pleated lampshade maker (Sewing based)

Successful applicants must have the ability to sew accurately, carefully and quickly have an eye for detail and finish with a responsible attitude to the work as we have to meet very specific delivery deadlines. Lampshade specific training will be given.

Handmade lampshade technician ( 1 required) - laminated lampshade maker

Successful applicants, must have the ability to work practically, have a sense of shape, patterns and ideally fabric. There are some physical aspects of the job working with large lampshades and materials. Lampshade specific training will be given and applicants should be aware it takes a long time to train in all aspects of making the shades as each we do is different, therefore we are looking for someone who is a quick learner, can problem solve and apply existing knowledge to new situations.

Recruitment process for shortlisted candidates: This can vary depending but generally in the first instance, this will involve a supported trial session, show-round of the workshop/factory and interview with possible further trials.
