Job Title:                       Art & Photography Assistant

Reports to:                   The Bursar, but with day to day responsibility to the Head of Art & Photography

Salary Scale:                  Technical Assistant Grade SCP 13-17: £17,349 - £18,904

Starting salary:              Scale Point 13, pro rata salary for 36 weeks and 37 hours £13,572 per annum, made up of Gross Salary £12,011 and an element of holiday pay £1,561 in lieu of paid holiday entitlement (see below).

Location:                       King Edward’s School, North Road, Bath

Hours of Work:           This is a term-time post generally for 36 weeks per annum; 37 hours per week, from 8.30am to 4.30pm Mon – Thursday and 8.30am – 4.00pm Friday (30-minute unpaid lunch break, lunch provided), although these may be varied from time to time by mutual agreement.

Holidays:                       20 days plus 2 statutory days paid holiday per annum, rising by 1 extra day for each completed year up to a maximum of 25 days. As this is a Term-time post, an element of pay currently equivalent to 13% is paid in lieu of holidays taken in School holidays in the first instance rising to 15.6% after 5 years’ service.

Pension:                        Automatic enrolment into the KES Support staff Personal Pension Scheme with Employer’s Contribution of 6% of salary, to be matched by 2% Employee contribution.

The School:     King Edward’s School, founded in 1552, is an Independent Co-Educational Day School; there are currently 770 pupils in the Senior School (including 220 pupils in the Sixth Form), 185 in the Junior School and 100 in the Pre-Prep. The School is situated on a privileged 14-acre site on the south-eastern edge of Bath, just below the University, with fine views of the City Centre and surrounding hills.  In addition, there are attractive playing fields one mile from the school at Bathampton.

Job Purpose:

To assist with the preparation of Art lessons and activities and to keep the Art & Photographic Department areas clean, tidy and in good order.  (General Cleaning staff support the latter activity by undertaking general cleaning duties: bin-emptying, floor sweeping, washing and buffing, dusting and mopping work surfaces etc. after school hours)

Main Activities:

  • Assisting the Teaching staff with the preparation of studios for lessons; and clearing, tidying, cleaning and storing art materials and apparatus between and after lessons.
  • Ordering stock and materials and organising and maintaining the stock cupboard, under the guidance of the Head of Art and Photography.
  • Provide technical support to teaching staff
  • Provide technical support for students, including GCSE and GCE year groups, under the direction of, and in conjunction with, the teaching staff
  • Maintaining secure storage and supply of tools, scissors and implements in the lockable cabinets in each classroom.
  • Assisting with preparing, setting up and taking down displays of Art and Photography work and presentation of exhibitions and moderations, both within the department and around the School.
  • Implementing School and departmental Health & Safety policies, procedures and practices and undertaking specific training as may be required from time to time.
  • Carry out visual checks of all electrical equipment and report any defects for attention
  • Check the condition of all machinery and apparatus in the department.
  • Such other similar duties as may be reasonably required from time to time.

Person Specification

Personal Attributes:

  • Fit, energetic and organised person able to cope with physical work (some heavy lifting may be required) as well as a multitude of small but important requests
  • Willingness and ability to undertake cleaning departmental surfaces, materials, apparatus (brushes, palette knives etc) using appropriate cleaning materials and equipment as provided
  • Ability and willingness to relate appropriately to pupils and deal with their various work-related requests.
  • Some knowledge of art techniques, approaches and different types of media (paints, printing, textiles etc) and/or a willingness to learn.
  • Willingness and ability to fetch and carry apparatus, materials and equipment between the art studios and photographic areas.
  • Some knowledge of simple administrative procedures, filing systems etc.
  • Willingness to be flexible and prepared to undertake repetitive or mundane tasks.
  • Able to work under occasional pressure or tight deadlines
  • Good oral communication skills
  • Basic IT skills
  • Willingness to work occasional overtime, for special events in the evenings or weekends.
