Dog Trainer An assistance dog charity has an amazing opportunity for a dog trainer to join the team! Canine Partners is an assistance dog charity which transforms the lives of disabled people through partnership with our specially trained assistance dogs. Our assistance dogs are trained to meet the needs of individuals with even the most complex physical disabilities. We help adults who have a physical disability or condition that affects their daily life and limits their independence. We have been training amazing assistance dogs since 1990, and have matched those dogs with over 700 people. Across the UK today we now have 400 active partnerships - that's 400 dogs out there helping disabled people lead a life of greater independence To help us create these amazing partnerships, we need amazing people. We have a fantastic new opportunity for a Dog Trainer to join our Advanced Training team based at our Southern Training Centre, at Heyshott, near Midhurst in West Sussex. Position: Dog Trainer Location: Heyshott, Midhurst, West Sussex Job Type: Full Time, Permanent Hours: 37.5 hours per week, Monday - Friday 8.30am - 5.00pm plus evening kennel duties on a rota basis and some weekends working when training partners. Salary: GBP19,099 per annum Closing Date: 9am 5th March 2018 Interview Date: 21st March 2018 About the role: In this extremely rewarding role, you'll be working directly with our assistance dogs in training. The role consists of providing structured training for young dogs between 14 and 18 months old in order to provide them with the skills and social behaviour required to become assistance dogs. Canine partners are carefully matched to our partners' needs and lifestyle, no matter how challenging. You will teach our dogs to carry out the everyday tasks that will help give our partners greater independence, such as opening and closing doors, unloading the washing machine, picking up dropped items, pressing buttons and switches and fetching help in an emergency. You will also provide training and education for our partners during their on-site training course, teaching them how to work with their dogs and continue its training. You'll also help them understand what motivates their particular dog and how to take care of their canine partner. It is during this two-week course that the special bond between dog and partner begins and our trainers are right at the heart of this. About you: The successful candidate will have a natural rapport with dogs, the ability to handle and train dogs, excellent communications and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work under pressure. You will also have good administration skills and the ability to keep up to date and accurate records. There are occasional overnight duties and weekend work as required. A full driving license is also essential. It is also essential that you have commitment to excellence and an ability to demonstrate a passion for your work. Ideally you will have experience training dogs using positive reward-based methods and an understanding of disabilities along with enthusiasm, positive attitude, flexibility and initiative.
