Three great opportunities have now arisen for enthusiastic and capable project and trainee managers to join the Project Management Office (PMO) at the British Antarctic Survey.  

What’s great about these roles?

There is huge variety in the projects we are delivering, so a chance to gain experience in many aspects of infrastructure delivery including the specific Antarctic factors such as logistics, environment and science interfaces.  Most of the time you will be based at the BAS head office in Cambridge surrounded by a large team of highly committed people passionate about delivering and supporting polar science.  There will also be opportunities to spend time at our stations in Antarctica during both the development and construction delivery phases of the projects.

We expect all team members to grow and develop their careers significantly through their involvement in this programme.  It is a fast moving environment and no two days are the same, which is part of the challenge and the excitement, however we have a strong team that supports each other and allows us to be successful.

You will be part of a team tasked with delivering one of the most exciting and challenging programmes of infrastructure projects ever commissioned by NERC/BAS.

NERC/BAS takes delivery of its new polar research vessel, the Sir David Attenborough, later in 2018.  This is part of a £225M programme of works, which also includes a number of land based infrastructure projects, such as wharf upgrades and station buildings and services improvements at the research stations at Rothera, Signy, King Edward Point and Bird Island. A separate programme of station improvements at Rothera (the UK Antarctic Hub) has also been agreed giving a total budget of around £300M to be invested in improving our Antarctic infrastructure.  These projects are known collectively as the Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Programme (AIMP).

NERC/BAS has entered into long term partnering contracts with our Technical Advisor, Ramboll, and our Construction Partner, BAM Nuttall, in order to deliver this challenging programme over the next six years.

What are we looking for?

For the Rothera Modernisation Project Manager we are looking for a professionally qualified project manager with:

• Site supervision experience on construction projects with significant building and or building services elements
• Experience of BREEAM or equivalent sustainability schemes
• Recent multi-year experience of delivering construction based projects using PRINCE2 methodology (or similar)
• Experience of delivering projects in complex environments with multiple stakeholders
• Substantial experience of negotiating with internal and external stakeholders in respect of project resources and delivery
• Direct experience of negotiating with external contractors in a project management context
• Experience of managing projects using the NEC3 suite of contracts

For the Trainee Project Manager we are looking for someone with a construction or engineering qualification and:

• Knowledge of the construction process, particularly those projects with significant building and or building services elements
• Knowledge of BREEAM or equivalent sustainability schemes
• Working understanding of PRINCE2 methodology (or similar)
• Appreciation of project delivery in complex environments with multiple stakeholders
• Knowledge of managing projects using the NEC3 suite of contracts
• Experience in data and information management
• Appreciation of the logistical and environmental issues in delivering construction projects alongside polar science programmes.

For the Project Information Manager we are looking for someone with good numeracy and literacy skills and:

• Data management experience
• Ability to work with diverse range of stakeholders strong communication skills
• Experience of providing support to project managers
