WORK PLACEMENTS – PENSMANSHIEL PROJECT  (8 weeks)
Melrose and/or Technopole, Bush Estate, Edinburgh
£8,75 per hour                                REF:  C/CS/111/18

SRUC is unique in Scotland and the North of England and one of the largest organisations of its kind in Europe. Our ambitious and exciting vision is to work at local, national and international levels, leading innovation and sustainable development in agriculture and rural sectors.

SAC Consulting (part of SRUC) are delivering a project on behalf of the Scottish Borders Council called ‘The Penmanshiel Compensatory Replanting Grant Scheme’ which is a tree planting grant scheme available in the Scottish Borders Area. The grant scheme has been funded under a developer contribution provided by the Penmanshiel wind farm developer, RES.

The wind farm development required the removal of a large spruce plantation on the Penmanshiel site, just off the A1 in the Scottish Borders.  The tree planting grant scheme was set up to replant over 110 ha of diverse woodland in the Scottish Borders.

In order to support this project and provide valuable work experience, we are anticipating requiring three work placements as follows:

WORK PLACEMENT A (x 1)
Working from the SAC Offices at Technopole, Bush Estate near Penicuik, Midlothian

This placement is based within our friendly team at our SAC Consulting offices for a period of 8 weeks and will give the participant an opportunity to work closely with an SAC Consulting Woodland Advisor managing the scheme. They will assist the Advisor in administration and co-ordination work associated with the Penmanshiel Project. This is an opportunity to learn about how Woodland and Forestry Cosultant/Managers use their skills to create positive outcomes in forestry management.

WORK PLACEMENT B (x 2)
Working mainly from Melrose

These two work placements will give the participants the opportunity to work closely with Michael Ramage Forestry -the approved forestry contractor involved in implementing some of the tree planting schemes funded by the grant. A more practical based placement, this will provide opportunities to learn and experience first hand, how forestry planting schemes work and will involve active involvement in planting.

If you are interested in one or both of the placements, please indicate your preference in the summary section of your application form.

For all placements the hours are 37 hours per week (Monday to Friday).

As the scheme is intended to benefit the local community, it is essential that applicants have a strong connection with the Scottish Borders.

No specific formal qualifications are required though a keen interest or background in outdoor work is essential.

Closing date: 25th February 2018

Please note that CVs will not be accepted without a completed application form.
