Coxswain/Mechanic - Arbroath Lifeboat Station

From £30,368 (dependent on experience)

Ref: 7976

There is an opportunity at Arbroath Lifeboat Station for someone whose resilience and leadership skills are just as strong as an ability to handle a boat in adverse sea conditions.

The majority of your time will be divided between ensuring the Mersey Class lifeboat and her equipment work to the highest order and training and assessing volunteer crewmembers to the RNLI’s competence standards. You will take them on seagoing exercises, identifying ways they can improve and imparting your valuable knowledge - so that when an emergency shout does occur, you, your crew and your lifeboat will be absolutely prepared.

As we work towards reducing preventable loss of life at sea, you will be part of the team at Arbroath developing and delivering proactive education and safety programmes working collaboratively with internal RNLI partners and wider external organisations.

You’ll need to demonstrate leadership qualities and the ability to motivate and maximise people’s potential. You must also be familiar with the correct operation, maintenance and repair of associated machinery and equipment. You will also act as an ambassador for quality, health and safety ensuring your boats, buildings and people are as safe as possible.

You’ll ideally already ideally be adept at handling all weather lifeboats (or equivalent) and have a detailed knowledge of navigation principles, ‘IRPCS’ and a detailed local knowledge of the area. You should have experience of maintaining high-speed diesel engines and the associated electrical and electronic systems of fast, modern boats of up to 20 metres in length.

Successful completion of a marine or commercial engineering apprenticeship or experience of working within the marine and mechanical environments would be desirable, but not essential. You will need to be computer literate and willing to learn new systems as demanded by this exciting, developing role.

You will be required to live in close proximity to the lifeboat station. You will be on call, when not on leave, to enable an effective response when a shout occurs. You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build effective relationships with volunteers at the lifeboat station, the area lifesaving manager, the local community, regional technical support and other volunteer teams in the local shop and fundraising.

As this is a sea-going appointment, you will need to satisfy the institution's medical and eyesight standards.

Closing date: 25 February 2018.

Interview date: 7 March 2018.
