The Opportunity
We currently have a fantastic opportunity for an experienced support worker to work for a rapidly expanding company who specialise in young people's services, dedicated to improving the lives of young people leaving care.
The Candidate
This will be a challenging yet rewarding role where you will need to work under pressure and develop great relationships.
Candidates should have:
- QCF Young Persons Workforce level 3 or Health and Social Care level 3 or be willing to start this course with this job
- To have a flexible work approach and to work shifts and to undertake duties in the evenings, weekends and sleep ins as and when required (based on monthly rotas)
- Experience within Social Care and youth work is compulsory
- Must have sound knowledge and understanding of current regulations
- Excellent presentation and communication skills
- Have authority ,confidence and experience dealing with 16 to 18 year olds who may have challenging behaviour.
The Role
Working as the sole member of staff on shift in a young person’s semi-independent unit, you will be responsible for the safeguarding of young people aged 16 to 18 within the service whilst adhering to current policies and procedures. You must therefore be confident and authoritative and have experience working with this age group, therefore this role may suit a mature candidate who is able to command the respect of the young people and ensure suitable behaviour is maintained within the home.
You will also need to develop and maintain relationships with the young people, acting as a mentor and advisor and someone they can trust and rely on as they make the transition into adulthood and full independence from the care system.
Typical Duties:
- Understanding rota compiled by manager and ensuring all shifts are covered
- Helping the young people with key life skills coaching such as paying bills, cleaning, cooking, shopping and budgeting, time management etc.
- Monitoring care packages for looked after young people.
- Updating residential core assessments, pathway plans and other competent reports as necessary.
- Direct work with young people and their families as part of the family support work to assess risks, strengths and viability of living in the community.
- Ensure Unit is considered as outstanding/good in the eyes of Local Authorities
- Day to day running of the home ensuring it is kept clean and tidy
- Liaison with a number of complex agencies on behalf of young people, including Border control, Immigration, youth justice, mental health services, housing, education and police amongst others. Only in the event that this is required outside normal working hours and the manager isn’t available.
- Attended team meetings.
- Maintain up-to-date both manual and electronic records and databases.
- Significantly improve the quality of numerous young people's lives by implementing quality care packages, full assessments, and planned move on packages.
Experience
You’ll need at least 2 full years paid or voluntary experience in the social work and care sector with references. You could get this in a number of ways like:
- working or volunteering at a youth club
- working as a social work assistant
- paid or voluntary work in a care home, nursery or relevant charity
- working in semi-independent unit (most preferable)
Age Requirements
To work in our semi-independent support, you must be at least 23 years old, and at least 4 years older than the oldest child in the home. For this reason, many of these jobs carry a minimum age restriction of 23 years.

- Good I.T skills and can use word and excel and email efficiently and aware of online safety

- Manage your own time effectively ensuring each young person on your case load has the allocated time spent with them
- An ability to form, develop and sustain relationships with young people
- To be able to record work effectively and appropriately
- Ability to work in partnership and communicate with a wide range of organisations
- To participate in Supervision, further training and developing the Service
- To be positive and enthusiastic to enable young people to reach their potential

Qualifications
- NVQ III in Health and Social Care, Certificate/Degree/HND Youth Work, Any other qualifications directed to work with Young People or willing to start the course with this job.
- Safeguarding certificate, but you would also be required to do Safeguarding Level 1 and 2 as mandatory training before taking up the post.
- Basic First Aid Certificate

Shift Pattern:
We can be flexible but sleep ins will be required and evenings and weekends

£9.75 per daily hour
