Senior Gardener – Join Our Zoo
Paignton, Devon
From £20,069.40 (minimum) DOE

Are you a highly trained, eager and ambitious horticultural or gardening professional looking for something different? If so, this is an amazing opportunity to progress your career with our leading zoo and make a real difference to our unique attractions in the South West.

About Us:

With over 2,000 animals spread across 80 acres of natural habitat, Paignton Zoo offers the ultimate day out for old and young alike.

While most people know us as one of the region’s leading attractions, we are also a conservation and education charity that is working to make a difference to the lives of animals, both in the UK and across the world.

Part of the Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust, we are dedicated to protecting our global wildlife heritage and inspiring respect for animals, plants and the environment.

Now, we are seeking a Senior Gardener to make sure our beautiful grounds are maintained and contribute to an outstanding experience for all guests.

The Benefits (after your probationary period):

- Defined contribution pension scheme
- Free entry to our three zoos for you and your immediate family
- Discounts in our catering and retail outlets
- Free staff parking at Paignton Zoo
- Company sick pay
- Childcare vouchers
- Branded uniform provided
- Develop your career with a leading charity
- Induction and ongoing training

This is a rare opportunity to get involved in much more than a gardening position. Imagine coming to work surrounded by some of the rarest and most beautiful wild animals and creating environments that are as diverse and breath-taking as our animal collection.

Forget merely pruning and cutting grass (although that will be involved), you will be working with a huge range of plant-life enabling you to expand your skill-set and range of experience. What’s more, with further training available, you’ll have the chance to develop your career, learn more and add to your future worth.

Your Role:

As a Senior Gardener, you will take charge of a specific area of our gardens and complete work there to the highest horticultural standards. Your role will involve working at Paignton Zoo and, on occasion, Living Coasts, our sister attraction in Torquay.

Overseeing a team of up to four staff, trainees and volunteers, you will assist in their training and development and ensure they are enabled to deliver amazing horticultural work.

Your role will also involve:

- Day-to-day maintenance of your section of the gardens
- Using initiative to identify and complete work that is required
- Supporting the Curator and Head Gardener and acting as the contact point for the department during their absence
- Supporting all other areas of the Botanical Gardens as required
- Helping to provide an incredible visitor experience, answering questions from guests and promoting the work of the zoo

About You:

To be considered as a Senior Gardener, you will need:

- At least four years’ professional gardening experience
- Good plant identification skills and competence in the use of a wide range of horticultural machinery
- At a minimum, an NVQ3, ND or above in Horticulture or a closely related field
- A full driving licence

Ideal candidates will have experience gained within a high quality horticultural establishment open to visitors, however this is by no means essential.

We’re eager to hear from individuals with experience as a Senior Gardener, Gardener, Senior Groundskeeper, Groundsperson, Estates Manager, Grower, Lead Grower, Horticultural Specialist, Horticultural Gardener.

The closing date for this role is Monday the 19th February 2018.
