Estate Management Section

Estate Management design, repair, maintain and secure all campuses. We aim to provide a seamless service to all students, staff and visitors. Covering a multitude of services, we are available to assist with any issue concerning the University estate and grounds.

We are looking for a mechanical supervisor for organising the mechanical trades and liaising with other trades across the University to carry out on-site maintenance, repair and upgrade of mechanical installations, inspection and testing of complex mechanical systems associated with building services, plant and equipment in all of the premises owned and operated by the University of Essex in accordance with the University of Essex Safe working on Mechanical Systems policy.

The Role and Duties

The post holder will be expected to diagnose and repair faults in complicated mechanical installations, plant and equipment and will undertake inspection and testing in line with British Standards.

The post holder will be expected to plan install of new plant, equipment and services, and will be responsible for managing the full planned and preventative maintenance (PPM) programme of works. Additionally, the post holder will be working to manuals, instructions, drawings and specifications without direct supervision.

Hours of work are 36 hours per week, to be worked over a shift system of 7am – 7pm. Weekend working is expected to be 1 weekend in 6 but flexibility is required. The post holder will be expected to cover the ‘on-call’ rota, which is anticipated to be 1 week in 12.

Skills and Qualifications required

The successful candidate will have completed a recognised qualification or training, and will hold an NVQ level 3 or City & Guilds or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or related industry.

It is essential that the successful candidate is able to demonstrate experience in the maintenance of commercial/industrial and domestic mechanical supplies, and advantageous if installation can be evidenced. The successful candidate must be able to communicate effectively, and is willing to learn new methods of working, showing flexibility where required.
