ABP owns and operates the country's busiest inland railfreight terminal handling in the region of 200,000 teus each year. Located eight miles outside Birmingham, the 11 ha Hams Hall Railfreight Terminal is situated adjacent to the Nuneaton-to-Birmingham railway line and handles deep-sea and short-sea traffic to and from ports such as Southampton, Tilbury, and Felixstowe, as well as traffic via the Channel Tunnel and domestic traffic from Scotland.

We have daily rail services to and from Southampton and Felixstowe, and our location offers excellent road links providing easy access to the M1, M6, M42 and M69 Motorways.

The performance of Hams Hall is recognised by the list of awards it has won and been nominated for by the industry, as well as being recognised by the Department for Transport which used Hams Hall as a case study for benchmarking rail terminal operations.   

The Role

Reporting to the duty coordinator on shift, the traffic office member of staff will attend site as per shift roster to facilitate the movement of road or rail vehicles in and out of site as per customer requirements.

The successful candidate will undertake and provide customer and terminal support in all vehicles entering or exiting the terminal through required office procedures as per the ISO9001:2008/ABP specified reporting format’s.

They will also be responsible for operating the terminal operating system as trained by ABP  to facilitate the loading and unloading operations of containers in the rail terminal, as well as assist with rail/road movements into and out of the terminal.

Accountabilities

  • Monitoring and managing terminal traffic to ensure operational KPI are maintained
  • Using TOS to book inbound road containers into the terminal, check for correct container ID and container damage
  • Security checks as required on inbound vehicles / containers
  • Liaise with customers / customers’ train planners reference daily operational requirements
  • Create trains on yard terminal operating management system ‘Autostore’ (TOS)
  • Liaise with duty coordinator regarding terminal performance / operational requirements
  • Process paperwork for incoming / outgoing containers, DGs and consists
  • Correctly record all outgoing / incoming train times
  • Control of contractors / security for the terminal for all those entering / exiting site

Skills and Experience

Essential:

  • Experience of working in an office environment
  • Good at planning and prioritising workload
  • Flexible to ensure deadlines are met
  • Good IT skills in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Good communicator and confident in dealing with enquiries
  • Ability to travel and attend allocated 24 hr shift patterns

Ideal:

  • Proven experience and knowledge of auto stores software
  • Proven knowledge of SAP systems
  • Proven knowledge and experience of hazardous goods regulations / legislation, for travel by rail
  • Experience or knowledge of rail operators
  • Experience of working on a SACTIFF site
