We offer an exciting opportunity for an experienced Project Manager to manage major programmes of research in the Department of Public Health and Primary Care (DPHPC, Head: Professor John Danesh). 

In 2015, the DPHPC established the NIHR Blood and Transplant Research Unit (BTRU) in Donor Health and Genomics (Director: Professor Danesh), in partnership with NHS Blood and Transplant.  The BTRU is addressing major questions about the health of blood donors and will produce evidence-based strategies to enhance donor safety while ensuring sustainability of blood supply.

A further five year award through the NIHR Cambridge Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) funds the Population and Quantitative Sciences (PQS) Theme of research, led by Professor Danesh in the Cardiovascular Epidemiology Unit (CEU), part of the DPHPC. Through innovative quantitative approaches, major new opportunities afforded by the ability to measure and analyse at scale vast amounts of data on tissues, patients, and populations in relation to genetic make-up, traits, and important diseases, this Theme will address two overarching questions:

1)  How can therapeutic target discovery and validation be substantially improved?

2)  How can disease understanding and management be substantially improved by harnessing high-dimensional (eg, molecular, imaging, e-record) data?

The primary purpose of this role is to facilitate the delivery of the BTRU and PQS research. The post holder will therefore be required to: (i) project manage the grants for the BTRU and PQS Theme of the BRC, ensuring that project milestones and deliverables are met on time and within budget; (ii) monitor expenditure and make recommendations to the Director/Principal Investigators/ Director of Operations regarding budgets; (iii) liaise directly with funding bodies to ensure compliance and correct management of the grant and; (iv) liaise with the Directors/Principal Investigators/Director of Operations to develop and implement strategy within these programmes of research. 

There will also be opportunities for the post holder to be involved in the scientific project management of a wide range of other grants/studies in the CEU.

To fulfil these objectives, the post-holder will be responsible for drafting scientific and administrative reports to funding bodies; communicating with key stakeholders; organising patient and public involvement and engagement (PPI/E) and training and capacity building programmes and; ensuring appropriate governance is in place, including for access to data/samples by external collaborators.  Additionally, the post-holder will ensure cohesion between the different scientific themes of these research programmes as well as the collaborating institutions involved in the research, e.g. the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, the University of Oxford, the MRC-Biostatistics Unit, Cambridge University Hospitals and NHS Blood and Transplant.

Main duties and responsibilities:

- Monitoring scientific progress within the BTRU / Population and Quantitative Sciences Theme in conjunction with the PI and scientific leads and ensuring that milestones and deliverables are met on time and within budget. Develop and implement strategy as necessary through liaison with PIs, senior scientists and the Director of Operations. Attending meetings with key funders/collaborators to discuss progress and ensuring cohesion between the different scientific themes of the programmes and with the collaborating institutions, and ensuring good communication with key stakeholders.

- Manage the BTRU / PQS grant finances (~£10M).  Monitor expenditure and make recommendations to Director/Principal Investigators/Director of Operations regarding budgets.  Liaise directly with funding bodies to ensure compliance and correct management of the grant.  Complete financial reports to funders and University, including assistance with audits as necessary.

- Preparing regular scientific and administrative reports for funding bodies and key stakeholders, leading in the writing of scientific content and collation of financial and other content as required.

- Liaising with funding bodies to ensure compliance and correct management of the grants.

- Ensure appropriate governance is adapted within the research programmes, including the implementation of collaboration agreements and data access agreements, as appropriate, in liaison with the Research Operations Office. Managing processes associated with access to samples and/or data generated through the programmes of research.

- Responsible for developing the existing Patient and Public Involvement/Engagement (PPI/E) strategy and actives in line with the objectives of the National Institute of Health Research.

- Organising and participating in all relevant meetings and committees (e.g. Management Committee Meetings), as well as the relevant seminar series.

- Other administration tasks arising on a day-to-day basis that are necessary to ensure the smooth-running of CEU grants, finances and other activities.

- Educated to degree level with a BSc in a relevant scientific field (e.g. biological or medical science) and hold a PhD or have equivalent experience.

Experience and Skills:

 - Ability to project manage a large grants, from scientific, financial and administrative perspectives.

- Ability to write complex scientific reports.

- Significant experience of research / project management in a university environment.

- Knowledge of bodies funding UK scientific research.
