ABP is the UK’s leading port operator, with a unique network of 21 ports across England, Scotland and Wales. Our ports include Immingham, the UK’s busiest port and Southampton, the UK’s leading export port and number one for cars and cruise. The group's other activities include ship's agency, dredging (UK Dredging Ltd), and marine consultancy (ABPmer). Each port also offers a well-established community of port service providers.

In 2015 ABP and its customers handled 92 million tonnes of cargo. Together with our customers, we support 84,000 jobs and contribute £5.6 billion to the UK economy every year.

ABP’s presence in South Wales consists of five ports, covering an area of 3,800 acres and contributing £1.4 billion to the UK economy. Heavy industry has a major influence on the cargoes handled at the South Wales Ports, but there is also an increasing range of other cargoes, including forest products, recyclables, agribulk products and bulk liquids.

The South Wales Ports are also involved in a significant number of renewable energy schemes and is now home to over 10MW of renewable energy projects.

The Role

Taking direction from Supervisors to undertake tasks and operate plant to achieve the safe loading / discharge of various cargoes from vessels and warehousing and redelivery of same to / from road and rail transport within the South Wales Ports.

Accountabilities

  • Operate heavy plant and machinery to achieve the safe and efficient handling of cargo. Plant to include loading shovel, telehandler, tug-master, various fork lift trucks and materials handler.
  • To undergo training to operate new and additional plant and equipment as required to meet customer and operational requirements. This will include the operation of quayside and mobile harbour cranes.
  • To engage in the safe movement of cargo in storage areas, warehouses and on vessels.
  • Comply with and assist in the development of Risk Assessments and Safe Systems of Work and ensure that all duties are undertaken in accordance with ABP's safety policies and procedures.
  • Provide assistance to record and compile administrative information associated with cargo movement as required.
  • Work with IT systems and internal / external software packages.
  • To undertake cleaning tasks and general maintenance duties associated with the efficient operation of the port.
  • Undertake duties to aid compliance for cargo handling.
  • To perform all other tasks as required.

Skills and Experience

Essential:

  • Knowledge of Port Operations.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Ability to operate heavy plant and machinery including, but not limited to, loading shovel, 360 excavator, tug-master and fork lift trucks.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team.

Ideal:

  • Crane driving - experience or willingness to learn.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours.
