About the role:We are seeking a Chief Engineer to work in the National Marine Facilities department. NMF are responsible for the operation and management of NERC owned two vessels in providing wider support in the co-ordination and management of the NERC Marine Science Facility program. Scientific Research Vessels provide the scientific platform to support the UK's world-wide oceanographic research program. This is a permanent position offered on NERC marine terms and conditions with 25 days leave accrued per month worked on board. About you:For this position, it is essential that you hold the following: • Certificate of Competency Chief Engineer III/2 (no restriction - motorships) • Seafarer Medical Certificate (ENG1) without restrictions • Four elements of basic training to STCW95 • STCW95 Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats• STCW 95 Advanced Fire Fighting • Proficiency in Designated Security Duties• Valid Passport and Discharge Book• High Voltage Management Level Desirable qualifications are;• Ship Safety Officer certificate You must demonstrate:• A high level of personal and professional knowledge and experience in the operation and maintenance of modern engineering and automated control systems. • A comprehensive understanding of all relevant conventions and national statutory regulations applicable to the role.• Experience of working on scientific research vessels is desirable, as is familiarity with purchasing and financial management tools, strong and independent problem solving and decision making and your abilities to effectively lead and organise staff.• Excellent team working and leadership skills and ability to build and sustain productive working relationships within the Organisation and the wider scientific community. • Ability to establish and complete agreed objectives within agreed standards and deadlines.• Confidence, joint (verbal and written) and strong negotiating skills.• Good IT skills. • Self-motivation, enthusiasm, initiative and flexibility to work in a changing environment and contribute beyond own immediate area to wider needs and priorities. Comprehensive understanding of all relevant convention and national statutory regulations applicable to the role to ensure compliance within the Engineering department. Desirable criteria: Familiarity with purchasing and financial management tools and techniques. An enthusiasm for advancing our understanding of the marine environment. Experience of working on scientific research vessels. Understanding of plant maintenance systems and operation. Four elements of basic training to STCW2010, as amended (First Aid, Fire Fighting, Personal Survival Techniques and Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities). Advanced Fire Fighting to STCW2010, as amended. Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats to STCW 2010, as amended. Proficiency in Designated Security Duties. Desirable Criteria: Ship Safety Officer certificate Communication Skills:Essential criteria: Able to prioritise work and manage time effectively and complete agreed objectives within agreed standards and deadlines. Confident and articulate written and oral communication skills at all levels, fluent and influential as appropriate for the audience. Job Purpose: For the assigned research vessel:-• As a member of the on-board senior management team, the Chief Engineer is in charge of the Engineering department and responsible for its safe and efficient operation. • Act as the Shipboard Safety Officer. Key Accountabilities/Primary Responsibilities: Seagoing Duty: • To maintain at all times the seaworthiness of the ship. Be fully familiar with the condition and operating limitations of hull and all ships machinery, inter alia;- Main power generation plant, prime movers and their auxiliary systems, such as cooling, fuel oil, charge air, lubrication oil systems etc., incl. pipe runs, tank and valve locations.- Machinery monitoring, alarms, power management systems- Electrical generation and distribution systems, including emergency power supply and first start arrangements.- Fire fighting systems and emergency procedures, in particular the emergency shutdown procedures and to actively lead in relevant drills. - Ship's fitted scientific systems, winches, deck equipment and associated hydraulic and electric equipment.- Black and grey water systems.- Potable water generation / treatment / storage / distribution systems. - HVAC and refrigeration installations.• To prioritise at all times, the safety of all personnel on board the vessel.• Take charge personally in all emergencies involving machinery (including scientific installations) in the event of fire.• Check, in conjunction with the Master, that the vessel is adequately provided with fuel oil, lubes, spares, etc. for the proposed cruise. To ensure that the appropriate Pre-Cruise sailing checklists are satisfactorily completed and the Master advised accordingly. Health, Safety, Environment and general conduct: • All staff shall provide the highest standard of service to support the objectives of the NERC Marine Facilities Programme on-board the vessels managed by NMF-Sea Systems.• To ensure compliance with the NMF-Sea Systems aims and objectives, policies, processes and procedures, especially operational practices in respect of safety and pollution prevention.• All staff shall participate in the implementation of the Safety Management System and to recognise that the delivery of a safe and efficient service calls for continuous improvement in skills, teamwork, procedures and provisions associated with safety management, protection of the environment and service delivery, through the identification of risks, inefficiencies and opportunities for further improvement and development..... click apply for full job details
