Sky WiFi operates a large scale public WiFi ISP network across the UK and Europe. As a Senior DevOps Engineer, you will have overall responsibility for the design, deployment and support of new implementations as well as maintaining, improving and scaling existing systems as a function of an effective and efficient engineering function.

Detailed Job Description

As a Senior DevOps Engineer, you will perform day to day operational Site Reliability duties across the service delivery platform whilst engaging in strategic project based activities required to deliver The Cloud's products roadmap in line with the commercial priorities and strategic direction of the business.

You will have a deep knowledge across the technology stack and take ownership of upgrade, monitoring and scaling/DR planning for core delivery systems as well as maintaining high availability systems to meet business SLAs.

Responsibilities include the design, development, testing, implementation, automation, monitoring and administration of the entire solution as well as resolving bugs, customer support, managing scale and participation in Agile retrospectives. Working with a team of like-minded technologists, you will plan, deploy and maintain critical business applications within prod/non-prod cloud environments.

You will work with DevOps leaders in other groups to define and align on standard operating procedures and best practices and influence other teams and broader engineering groups in adopting cloud technologies and processes.

The Senior DevOps Engineer will automate the provisioning of environments, utilising Chef and deploying Docker containers within a Kubernetes environment. You will develop and enable continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) for building and deploying our components.

Frequent technologies used in this role would be: vSphere 6, Chef, Docker, Kubernetes, Linux, Networking, Java and Scripting utilising CI/CD pipelines.

Candidate's Profile

The successful candidate will have a proven background with:

  • Able to lead digital transformation from physical to be able to build a private cloud.
  • Clearly demonstrate ability to scale distributed components, and clearly articulate best practices.
  • Ability to track down root causes of issues and demonstrate a methodical way of thinking.
  • Expert knowledge and experience in Linux Administration and Networking in a data center environment.
  • Prior experience with OpenStack, Cloud Foundry, VMWARE ESXi, vSphere.
  • Expertise in a Java development background would be a bonus.
  • Docker & Kubernetes knowledge and experience highly desirable.
  • Experience with automation/configuration management using Chef and its supported utilities
  • Ability to use a wide variety of open source technologies and cloud services (experience with vSphere/ESXi is required)
  • Strong experience with SQL and PostgreSQL, (NoSQL experience is a plus, too, since also use Cassandra/Memcached)
  • Demonstrate working experience of code and script (Python or Ruby)
  • Continuous integration tools such as Jenkins
  • Telco or WiFi Service Provider experience or background will be an advantage.
