First opened as a museum, library and School of Art in 1893, but the site has been occupied by some of the city’s richest families since the 17th century. Since then the museum has gone through many changes. Most significantly with a major expansion opened by the Queen in 1991, the opening of the Millennium Gallery and the Rotunda in 2001 and the redevelopment of the ground floor level in 2011 to become the popular Roman Frontier Gallery.

They look after a collection of national and international importance on behalf of the City of Carlisle. From armour belonging to the notorious Border Reivers; Roman finds from underneath the City, to stunning works by the Pre-Raphaelites; the Museum’s collection is remarkable in its breadth and depth.

In 2017 they were awarded ‘Museum of the Year’ at the prestigious Cumbria Life Culture Awards and were awarded the ‘Best Told Story’ Accolade by VisitEngland.
