Applications are invited for an 3 year EPSRC -funded Post-Doctoral Research Associate on a multi-disciplinary research project, Modelling the Mechanics of Animal Whiskers (MMEAW), involving LSBU, UCL and MMU.

This research seeks to extend our understanding and knowledge of how whiskers are adapted to their function. Working from a multi-disciplinary perspective, we will analyse the effects of the key morphological parameters observed in animal whiskers - the various types of curvatures, taper, twist, cross sectional properties, and loading conditions - in a systematic and unified way.

We will additionally study nonlinear phenomena, such as loop formation, extreme bending and twisting, knot formation, snap buckling and other secondary effects. The team will also consider how this knowledge and understanding may carry across to engineering e.g., in the design and deployment of flexible structural devices used in robotics and structural engineering.

The post holder will be based at the LSBU campus with Dr Geoff Goss and will work closely with Prof van der Heijden at UCL. We will additionally be collaborating with Dr Robyn Grant at MMU.
