EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

2017 has been the first year of Hull's four-year tenure as the UK City of Culture, and what a year it has been! From the quality and diversity of a world-class arts programme, to the reach into communities, national and international perception change, sell-out audiences and increased sense of pride and record levels of participation, 2017 has been a catalytic year for the city.

As this momentous year comes to an end, we have set out an ambitious 20-year legacy plan that will fully realise Hull's potential to become a thriving cultural city by becoming a permanent arts organisation, leading cultural strategy in the city and continuing to commission groundbreaking work in Hull and beyond.

To do this, Culture Company is appointing a new Leadership Team of Executive Director and Programme Director. Working collaboratively, you will build and run a thriving organisation and deliver an ambitious programme of work, establishing Culture Company as a leading cultural commissioner, producer and talent incubator working in the North of England, nationally and internationally.

The Trustees, in consultation with the successful candidates, will determine whether one of the posts will also assume the responsibility of CEO or whether this will be a shared responsibility.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategic Leadership

- With the Programme Director, provide inspirational leadership for the Company, ensuring the profile, reputation and success of the Company continues to grow within the city and region, as well as nationally and internationally.

- Provide collaborative cultural leadership for the city, the region and beyond.

- With the Programme Director, develop a strategic plan for the Company's activities for an initial three-year period, in keeping with the Company's overall vision.

- Promote and maintain an organisational culture which values the highest standards in executing the Company's creative vision and in management practice, drawing the very best from a small but committed staff.

Communications & External Relations

- Build and maintain effective working relationships with the Chair and Board of Trustees, strategic partners and stakeholders), local businesses, local artists, cultural organisations and resident groups.

- Advocate for and promote the Company and the city, representing the organisation and communicating its aims to key opinion-formers and decision-makers and within government, industry, community and business sectors.

- Act as a spokesperson for the organisation and develop good, productive relations with the press and other media.

Finance

- Lead the Finance function and assume overall responsibility for the Company's accounting, finance and budgeting operations, financial controls, procurement, compliance and the Company's wholly owned trading subsidiary.

- Determine and lead on financial and commercial strategy for the Company providing financial analysis and guidance on all activities, plans and targets, including feasibility analysis.

- Oversee the preparation and presentation to the Board of management accounts, detailed annual budget and cashflow forecasts, production budgets and the measurement of financial and operational performance against targets.

- Provide effective management to the Finance team to ensure all financial information is accurate and timely to inform strategic decisions.

- Ensure that appropriate governance structures and internal control procedures and frameworks are in place that reflect and support the activities of the Company.

- Ensure that all funding reports are made in a timely manner to enable the income projections to be met.

- Ensure that all legal and statutory requirements are met including the preparation of Annual Report & Financial Statements for the Company and its trading subsidiary.

Commercial

- Maximise income generation from a range of trading activities which complement the primary objectives of the charitable Company and identify appropriate opportunities for future income generation.

- Develop and nurture the commercial capability of the Company by embedding good business disciplines and practices, and fostering a commercial awareness and approach across the organisation.

- Direct the Company's Box Office operations, ensuring income targets are planned and achievable, in line with an appropriate pricing and sales strategy.

Fundraising & Development

- Devise and implement a fundraising strategy to secure all necessary resources for the operation of the Company and its Programme of activity.

- Set and deliver agreed financial income targets to ensure that the Company retains a strong financial position at all times.

- Develop and lead relationships with public and private sector funders, trusts & foundations and individuals in the city and across the UK, overseeing a partner servicing strategy, including a comprehensive package of rights and benefits, and a series of events to cultivate and maintain relationships with partners.

- Prepare and negotiate partnerships and partnership agreements.

- Oversee the preparation and submission of funding and evaluation reports.

Legal & Business Affairs, HR

- Lead and maintain the legal function for the Company, ensuring the delivery of high quality legal services (either in-house or outsourced).

- Ensure good governance across the Company and maintain compliance with all relevant legislation.

- Act as Company Secretary to the Board, its Finance and Audit sub-committee and the board of the trading subsidiary.

- Determine and implement fully an appropriate and effective procurement policy and system, ensuring that it is compliant with current legislation.

- Oversee the drafting and negotiation of all legal documentation across the Company including funding, production and commercial contracts.

- Lead on and supervise the brand protection function for the Company.

- Oversee the management of the Company's human resources, administration and ICT functions and the development of effective policies and strategies, ensuring that appropriate resourcing is in place to deliver the Company's strategic plan.

- Lead, develop and monitor the Company's systems of risk management and embed effective risk management within the organisation.

Research & Evaluation

- Oversee all monitoring and evaluation activity for the Company ensuring that the needs of funders and external partners are met.

- Work closely with Hull University to align and integrate the Company's evaluation and monitoring activity within a wider research and evidence programme for the city and region.

- Set the standard of data capture and reporting required within the Company, and ensure that delivery partners are capturing the required data and consistently meet data quality standards.

- Ensure appropriate internal and external dissemination of evaluation findings, ensuring key learnings are extracted and communicated with impact to a range of stakeholders.
