London, Riverside House

Ofcom is the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries. We regulate the TV, radio, fixed-line telecoms, mobile telecoms and postal sectors, plus the radio spectrum over which wireless devices operate.

We are looking for a self-starting fluent English speaker to watch and listen to TV and radio programmes broadcast in Urdu and translate the content into English.

It would be desirable, but not essential, if the successful candidate could also translate programmes broadcast in Modern Standard (“MS”) Arabic, North African (“NA”) Arabic and/or Punjabi into English as well.

What you’ll be doing

Based in Ofcom’s London office, and working within Ofcom’s Content, Standards, Licensing and Enforcement (“CSLE”) Team, the successful candidate will be required to provide translations of Urdu (and preferably also MS Arabic, NA Arabic and/or Punjabi) programmes, broadcast on TV and radio. This is to assist the CSLE Team in assessing and investigating whether programmes comply with Ofcom’s rules in areas such as: harm and offence; due impartiality; commercial references; and incitement to crime.

It would also be helpful if the successful candidate has experience of working in broadcasting or journalism and a keen interest in news and current affairs would be preferable.

This post is for an initial six month fixed-term contract and depending on the successful candidate’s performance, there will be an option to extend the term of engagement or for the role to become permanent.

- Providing in an impartial manner up to date cultural, political, religious background to programmes broadcast in Urdu (and MS Arabic, NA Arabic and Punjabi) on TV and radio channels.
- Occasionally acting as an interpreter at meetings with broadcasters who speak Urdu (and MS Arabic, NA Arabic and Punjabi).
- Gaining knowledge and an understanding of Ofcom’s rules and procedures, including the Broadcasting Code.
- Assisting generally with Ofcom’s assessments and investigations into possible breaches of the Broadcasting Code, with a focus on those channels that broadcast in Urdu (and MS Arabic, NA Arabic and Punjabi), identifying potentially difficult or sensitive issues, escalating in a timely way, as necessary;
