Role Profile


Assist the senior library assistant/library assistant in the effective delivery of library services to the community and deputise in their absence.


Corporate Responsibilities

  • To undertake individual role in line with the Council’s Strategic Priorities and in compliance with the Council’s corporate policies and procedures.
  • To undertake any other reasonably required duties as instructed by Management or someone acting on their behalf, in addition to the role specific tasks & responsibilities detailed below.

Role Specific Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Assist the senior library assistant/library assistant in the effective delivery of library services to the community and deputise in their absence.
  • Deal directly with queries from colleagues and customers who may be either internal or external, through telephone, written or face to face contact.
  • Contribute to efficient circulation, charging and registration processes.
  • Contribute to maintaining an attractive and organised library, including book displays, stock categorisation and shelving duties.
  • Support the public in developing their reading interests and take part in reader development activities.
  • Encourage children and young people to use the library effectively and deliver activities such as Bookbug in collaboration with senior staff.
  • Support the public in accessing the People’s Network, the online library catalogue and electronic information resources.
  • Liaise with learners and volunteer buddies and contribute to the development of learning opportunities in libraries, including sharing of good practice.
  • Typing / word processing a variety of documents e.g. memos/letters/reports.
  • Entering and retrieving data from a range of computerised or manual systems,     maintaining confidentiality and sensitivity where appropriate.
  • Compiling information, producing basic statistics and completion of checklists.
  • Filing, photocopying, faxing and processing mail.
  • Monitor the security and effective maintenance of the library, as a nominated key holder,   reporting to the senior library assistant.
  • Attend meetings and outreach events as required by senior staff.  






Education and Qualifications

  • 3 National 5 qualifications, 'O' Levels or Standard Grades or Equivalent 
  • Relevant vocational qualification (e.g. SVQ level 2 or equivalent)
