Role Summary

We are looking for a Senior Business Development Manager who will be responsible for developing and executing business development and marketing plans for the Corporate Department, working in conjunction with the Business Manager and partners as well as the wider business development & marketing team. This role has two direct reports, a Senior Business Development Executive and a Business Development Executive.

Our Corporate team regularly advises on, and co-ordinates, complex, cross-border transactions for our clients. As a full service office, we cover all the practices expected of a major law firm in the UK, many of which are acclaimed and market-leading. Our client base consists primarily of multinational corporates, based in the UK and elsewhere, and financial institutions.

The department's transactional experience is recognised by several independent rating organisations and league tables, including Thomson Reuters, which has ranked Baker & McKenzie as one of the top ten M&A legal advisors by number of announced deals, both globally and in each of four regions for the past four consecutive years.

We are looking for someone with the gravitas and expertise required to win the confidence of partners to successfully help build client relationships, revenues, profitability and brand.

You should have a confident yet pleasant manner and an ability to influence others. You will be proactive with an ability to work with little supervision. Additionally, you should possess excellent oral and written communication skills, particularly when preparing materials and pitches.

Responsibilities

To provide high quality, proactive business development, marketing and communications support to the Corporate department.

Working closely with the Business Manager, Corporate Partners and the Director of Marketing, Comms & BD, the BDM will build an understanding of the business objectives and activities of the practice, help to develop and implement a detailed business development and communications plan. This role is part of the wider Marketing & Business Development community in London, so you will be able to build close relationships with all members of that team.

Specific responsibilities are as follows:

Client Development

Working with Partners to develop new business from existing and new clients. Act as a strategic advisor to some of the corporate department's largest clients.
Identify opportunities where we can support our clients, understand how we can maximise these opportunities, identify how we can broaden and deepen the relationship, identify trends and talking points and how these are important when building a better understanding of our clients and overcoming obstacles/blockages that may prevent us being able to develop the relationship.
This includes personally conducting client feedback and identifying trends.

Pitch Management

Taking responsibility for the entire pitch lifecycle and providing both strategic and practical input to the pitch process. Ensuring that teams follow best practice pitch process, which will include

win the work we most want and improve win rates generally
deliver standout proposals that hit the mark with clients, directly addressing their needs
improve visibility and engagement on upcoming pursuit activity
development of specific key messages, preparation and review of documents
building complex and innovative pricing proposals
coaching and constructively challenging teams, dry-running proposal presentations and gathering feedback as appropriate.

Candidates should be prepared to handle a significant volume of pitches.

Implementing Business Plans

To provide assistance to the Corporate Partners and the Business Manager in formulating and developing the business development action plans.
Prompting partners/fee earners to achieve results and regularly monitoring and sharing progress against the plan

Communications

Formulate and manage the communications strategy for the Department in terms of external and internal promotion in line with the business plans. Develop content as required for web, PR, training and client facing events. Liaise with the Central PR Team This includes overseeing and writing some of the directory submissions
Developing client events which resonate, raise our profile and attract the right clients. To ensure client interactions are routinely taking place during and post events with client opportunities identified and progressed

Job Holder Requirements

Creativity

Good level of creativity and flexible thinking. Capable of facilitating brainstorming sessions with fee-earners to generate ideas for improving the relationship with current clients and for targeting new prospects.

Client Focus

Should be capable of 'seeing the world through the client's eyes' to maximise effectiveness as a business development support to fee-earners.

Interpersonal Skills

Excellent interpersonal skills and possess a high level of personal esteem coupled with verbal reasoning, persuasiveness and listening skills to be an effective coach and BD support to fee-earners. Must have strong personal organisation and high persistence and resilience in seeing tasks through. Expected to develop excellent working relationships with colleagues within Baker & McKenzie. Being a team-player is key.
Success in this role depends the ability to influence, gain trust and to act in a decisive and business-like manner.

Body of Knowledge and Maturity

Expected to be a marketing & business development professional with a minimum 2:1 degree and/or a post-graduate qualification in marketing or equivalent experience.
Demonstrate maturity of approach and the ability to see the 'big picture' with an ability to prioritise actions in order to deliver against set objectives.
The jobholder will have extensive experience of providing marketing and business development support in a business-to-business environment.

Technology Skills

Skilled in Microsoft office and in particular PowerPoint, Word and Excel. He/she will be comfortable with intelligence gathering for business development purposes using web-based and library resources.

Pressure and Intensity

Nature of the position means that the jobholder must be able to multi-task and work to a number of deadlines. Jobholder is therefore expected to take a flexible approach to working hours.
