Assistant Mechanical Engineer

Our operational area covers a range of activities including: buildings and infrastructure maintenance, capital developments, project work, property, estate, utilities and environmental management. Facilities also provides central support services such as security, sport, telephones, post, stores and transport, as well as monitoring and identifying the use of space throughout the University.
This role forms part of the Facilities Engineering Section which is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the University estate which comprises of a variety of nearly 300 buildings ranging from offices, shops, laboratories, hangars and hotels to houses, flats and student halls of residence; contained within a campus of approximately 230 hectares of land.
You will be responsible for the operational supervision and control of approved contractors. This will involve reviewing risk assessments, method statements in accordance with the University's policies and procedures and issuing permits to work. You will supervise the work and carry out regular inspections to check on quality and compliance with appropriate standards.
You will oversee the delivery of mechanical projects including specifying the work, managing the procurement process, appointing the contractor and managing the contractor during the works.
You will have a HNC/D or NVQ (Level 4) in a relevant subject area and/or suitable trade based qualifications with extensive proven experience in a similar role. Evidence of formal health and safety training relevant to mechanical installations is essential. You will also need considerable experience of providing mechanical engineering support in a complex organisation.
