Job Description
Overall Purpose
Vocational Skills Practitioner is an essential role in the delivery of vocational trades and professional courses in the Division. The actual tasks involved will vary considerably, however, the key responsibilities are:
- To provide support to the department and lecturers to ensure that effective teaching and learning can take place.
- To provide support, coaching and guidance to each learner in the learning environment to enable them to achieve their qualification.
- To ensure the effective and efficient use of resources within a safe environment to support curriculum delivery and learner achievement.
Accountabilities
Assist lecturers in the production, preparation, adaptation and organisation of training
and learning materials and resources to meet the needs identified by the curriculum to
support learner achievement.
Undertake coaching, learning workshops, small group tutoring supervised by the lecturer. Prepare and demonstrate practical tasks and processes to individuals and small groups, as requested by the lecturer, to enhance and broaden the learner experience.
Support the lecturer in all workshop activities and provide technical support for all activities within the workshop and other learning environments, to enable effective delivery of the session.
Observe learner performance and practical work to assist the lecturer in the assessment of learners and their work in relation to approved assessment criteria.
Assemble various structures, install, maintain prepare, reclaim materials and other resources to ensure workshops/learning environments are suitably equipped for teaching activities.
Manage and implement the movement of equipment and materials within the Division and, elsewhere across the College if required, in a timely and effective way so as to maximise use for teaching and learning.
Establish and maintain high standards of safe working practices and a clean and safe working environment. Act as a role model for learners, demonstrating as required, safe working practices and the safe use of equipment to ensure learners adhere to health and safety regulations.
Maintain, service and care for electronics equipment allocated to the Division taking
particular responsibility for the safety and security of such equipment, arranging
portable appliance testing (PAT) as required, to ensure the equipment meets the required standard for teaching and learning.
Carry out risk assessments as appropriate for the Division, under the guidance of the Head of Division, to ensure the safety of learners and staff.
Operate, maintain and control a cost effective stock ordering and control system.
Take responsibility for inventories and other College documents/procedures as required.
Assist in organising appropriate functions including parents evenings and awards evenings and take a full part in Open Days to promote the College and the Division.
Support staff and all Divisional learners on the organisation and management of external visits and exchanges, to enable a broader learning experience for the learner.
Other duties
- The post holder will be required to encompass the use of information and learning technology (ILT) as appropriate to his/her level of responsibility.
- Comply with, and implement as appropriate, all College policies and procedures, with particular reference to Equal Opportunities, Quality and Health and Safety.
- Undertake continuing professional development as appropriate. Take a full part in the College staff development programme including the appraisal process.
- Undertake such other duties and responsibilities as may be reasonably required by the Head of Division within the grading and level of the post, working flexibly across other areas of the Division and the College as required.
