Position summary

The application support engineer position provides technical support and administration services to the Web & Communications Team within the EMEA division of STERIS IT.  The position will work directly with the business and other IT resources, both in the EMEA division and across the STERIS group as a whole, to implement and support technology solutions that produce desired business results.

·Supports and administers web and communications systems originating in the EMEA region of the STERIS IT department (90%)

a.Provides troubleshooting and fault fixing services to the Web and Communications Team

b.Supports and administers the Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP (LAMP) environments used by the Web and Communications Team

c.Analyzes business needs as they relate to our implementation of web and communications technologies; supports development efforts on platforms which fall into the remit of the position

d.Partner with internal resources and external vendors to formulate solutions and execute implementation plans.

e.Responds to threat assessment reports within the scope of the position, classifying threats, developing, testing and implementing fixes

f.Software testing, validation

g.Works out of hours on agreed schedules to release upgrades and implement fixes

h.Trains others to properly use the systems within the remit of the post

i.Documents and maps web and communication systems, including functional specs and server architecture

·Stays current with applicable technologies, carries out independent research and attends training as required (5%)

·Assists with the mentoring and ongoing training of staff working in related areas (5%)

·Performs other duties as required


·One or more years of professional IT experience in an application support role (specific experiences can be concurrent).

·One or more years’ experience of supporting and administering a Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP environment

·Demonstrable experience of web technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript

·Demonstrable experience of supporting and administering web content management systems, preferably Wordpress.

·One or more years’ experience of spreadsheet and database technologies, preferably Microsoft Excel and MySQL.

·One or more years’ experience of working closely with staff at all levels across the business


·The candidate must provide a high level of competency in support and administration of web technologies

·Proven ability to deliver cost effective results to tight deadlines

·Proven commitment to innovation in information technology, specifically web technologies

·Ability to effectively operate in teams

·Strong oral and written communications skills

·Ability to operate independently under pressure

·Willingness to learn new technologies relevant to the post
