Voluntary Associate Hospital Manager

Do you have an interest in supporting individuals detained under the mental health act?

In February 2017 Cygnet Health Care is opening a brand new hospital in the centre of Coventry for women with complex mental health needs and is looking for local people to take up the voluntary role of Associate Hospital Manager. This post is a key function in supporting the administration of the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended 2007).

The role of the Associate Hospital Manager (AHM) is to review service-user cases as part of a panel of AHMs, analysing written and oral evidence from practitioners, service-users, relatives and other relevant people, and deciding whether they meet the statutory criteria for continuing detention under the Act.

Experience is not essential as training will be provided to assist you in the role. This will include training in how risk is assessed and how to understand a risk assessment report, the law, work with service users and professionals, reach sound judgements, and to properly record decisions.

The following attributes would be desirable:

  • The ability to communicate appropriately and effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • A good listener
  • Prepared to debate civil liberty and human rights issues
  • Act with probity, use good independent judgement and abide by the law and principles of good practice
  • Manage time effectively in terms of both availability to the Hospital and conduct of reviews

This is a voluntary role for approximately 2-4 hours per month and is an expenses paid only post. This post is subject to the receipt of 2 satisfactory references & DBS clearance.

For further information about this role, e-mail to Richard Clark (Hospital manager) by following the instructions at the bottom of this page.
