Salary: £25,625 per annum
Contract Type: 13 Month Internship
Position type: Full Time
Hello, we’re the Pension Protection Fund. We protect millions of people in the UK who belong to defined benefit pension schemes. Our members rely on us to look after their pensions if their employers collapse and the pension schemes can’t afford to pay what they promised.
The PPF is delighted to announce that we’re now accepting applications for our 2024 actuarial internship programme. This is a 13-month programme, starting at the beginning of July 2024 and finishing at the end of July 2025. It’s open to current students who would like to complete a placement year after the second year of their degree course.
Please note that this programme is only available to current undergraduates.
What we can offer you
The PPF has a unique position in the UK market as we straddle the divide between pensions and insurance, whilst also producing some of the most prominent pensions reporting in the country. This means we use techniques from across the whole actuarial spectrum to keep our scheme running. As an intern, you can learn a broad range of these skills during your time with us, which will be useful in whatever branch of actuarial work you pursue in your career. As one of the biggest defined benefit pension funds in the UK with tens of billions under management, we also employ a sophisticated approach to investment and can provide you with a fascinating insight into this side of the business.
On top of the valuable actuarial skills you’ll gain in your time with us, we’ll also give you lots of opportunities for personal development and training.
What you can offer us
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with a strong academic record and demonstrable communication and influencing abilities to work within a high-profile and well-respected financial services organisation. We expect interested applicants to have numerical aptitude, ideally with a high A Level grade in Mathematics (or equivalent) and be studying towards an actuarial or mathematics-related undergraduate degree on track for a 2.1 classification or above.
A good competency of Microsoft Office packages (especially Excel) would be of added interest, as would any experience of VBA, R, C#, Python or similar.
You’ll be a valued member of the team, collaborating on work that makes tangible differences to our organisation. You’ll get to work with a wide range of people at different levels across the organisation and be given responsibility for a variety of work including running internal models and valuation programmes, as well as the opportunity to check results and contribute to improving our models and processes.

In return for your skills, experience and commitment we’ll give you a challenging role within a business where you’ll get the support you need to develop your career.
You’ll also get an outstanding rewards package which includes a generous pension scheme, private medical insurance, health cash plan, critical illness insurance, volunteering leave, holiday trading and a discretionary bonus scheme.
