As a Media Officer with the British Red Cross, you'll ensure that audiences understand our work with people in crisis and our impact in the UK and around the world.

Right now, we are front and centre of the response to coronavirus in the UK and globally. But your areas of interest and eye for a powerful story will go far beyond that.

You could find yourself working with journalists and Red Cross colleagues on anything from global emergencies and natural disasters, to protracted conflicts, chronic hunger and climate change, not just as it relates to other countries but how it affects the UK too.

As well as helping people to prepare for, survive and rebuild after a crisis, you will be highlighting health inequality and the migration, displacement and refugee issues that we care about too.

What you will be doing...

As a Media Officer, you will be part of a busy press office working in the news team, under the direction of the UK Media Manager. You will be delivering time sensitive media work on some of the biggest stories of our time, working alongside our social media, PR, advocacy teams and fundraising teams. You will be working on both fast-paced media responding to world events and proactively driving the news agenda to our key issues.

This is a frontline role that makes a vital contribution to the public positioning of the British Red Cross.

What we are looking for...

With a sound working knowledge of media within the UK and a strong understanding of the news agenda and how and where to pitch a story, candidates should have:

- Sound editorial judgement and the ability to spot issues that could create a reputational risk
- Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal, able to adapt your writing style for different audiences and channels
- Experience of communicating in at least one of the following contexts; international aid/humanitarian response, migration and displacement (international and/or UK); health and social care in the UK, advocacy or UK public policy
- An understanding of how media fits into strategic, integrated, communications plans
- Evidence of building and maintaining relationships with journalists
- Experience of harnessing online and social media to reach new audiences and support earnt media coverage
- Ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines
- Ability to work well as part of a team
- Ability to build and maintain good working relationships internally and externally with a variety of stakeholders with multiple priorities

Meet the team...

Along with colleagues in our PR, social media, policy and fundraising teams, you'll be keen to innovate and explore how we can engage with new and more diverse audiences, including potential donors and volunteers, so that more people to give us their time, their money or their voice.

The closing date for this role is 23.59 on Tuesday 23rd August 2022 with interviews to follow shortly thereafter.

We offer a wide range of staff benefits, these include:

36 days holiday (including Bank Holidays)
Option to buy an extra 5 days annual leave
Up to 6% contributory pension
Flexible working policy
