Health and Safety Officer – Legal Services Department – Head Office (Ref: 791)
The Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers is one of the UK's largest trade unions.
A vacancy exists for a Health and Safety Officer, based at the Union’s Head Office in Salford Quays.
The salary is £43,918 pa rising to £49,892 pa after successful completion of the probationary period. There are no set hours for this position, and the post holder will be expected to be adaptable and flexible to meet the needs of the job. The post holder will be required to live within 50 miles of their office base. Overnight stays and weekend working may be required.

The principal duties are: to provide expert advice and support to the Union on occupational health and safety matters; develop and promote the policies of the Union on health and safety at work; advise members, Union representatives and Officials of the Union on health and safety matters; raise awareness and generate activity on health and safety issues.
The successful applicant will possess: Tech IOSH membership (or higher) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (desirable) or equivalent and will be able to demonstrate a commitment to CPD as an OHS professional; a detailed understanding and experience of occupational health and safety issues, health and safety law and the work of the HSE and local authorities in the enforcement of the law; a detailed understanding and experience of the trade union role in health and safety and the trade union approach to health and safety issues; a detailed understanding of UK and international health and safety developments; excellent communication skills; the ability to work under pressure; the ability to meet tight deadlines.
