Job description

As a Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) Operator, you will play a vital role in the delivery of traffic services to vessels that navigate in the service areas. With support and training you will ensure compliance with all local, national and international regulations in the vitally important interests of the safety of life and protection of the marine environment. You will manage the day-to-day operations and provide a high and effective standard of VTS service delivery. You will be responsible for reporting breaches of national and international regulations pertaining to the safety of navigation to the appropriate authorities and supporting any investigatory action as the result of any contravention or serious incident.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Delivery of a vessel traffic service as defined by IALA recommendations and guidelines to vessels navigating in the service area to ensure compliance with all local, national and international regulations in the vitally important interests of safety of life and protection of the marine environment.

• Managing day-to-day operations and ensuring the role-holder's team provide a high and effective standard of VTS service delivery.

• Planning, prioritising and managing work based on dynamic risk assessments, and ensuring resources are available for both forecast and actual demand.

• Balancing work against resource and - where assessed as necessary, or where there is a skills deficiency in the role holder's team, or where workloads may exceed the capacity of the role-holder's team - recommending additional staff or assistance from other teams to provide suitable coverage.

• Implementing sound leadership, management and direction within a team, and ensuring safe working practices are maintained. Promoting a culture of safety to mariners and coastal users.

Additional Information

There will be occasional travel with this role for your initial and ongoing training.

Due to the nature of the role, you will also be required to pass a medical.

You will need to have the willingness to work towards the V103/1 qualification.

To be successful in this role you will be required to have a good level of numeracy skills, and have excellent attention to detail especially with verbal, face to face, written, and audio communications. You will also be required to be IT literate and can easily multitask.
