AWE is currently looking for Mechanical Engineers at various career stages to contribute to the delivery of Orion, our petawatt laser facility which plays a crucial role in supporting the safety, reliability, and performance of nuclear warheads throughout their lifecycle. The successful candidates will directly contribute to the unique and extraordinary challenges of the design and development of equipment for our world-leading laser systems and the experiments conducted with them.

Location - Reading area (on-site role)

Package - GBP30,000 - GBP46,000 pa (depending on your suitability and level of experience)

What will you be responsible for?

  • All aspects of delivery - contributing to the conceptual design, detail design, manufacture, assembly, and test of equipment

  • Contribute to the production and delivery of technical documents, reports, and presentations including specifications, design reviews, operational documents, and validation evidence for the engineering solutions

  • Identifying and supporting opportunities for cost savings, efficiency, and business improvement

  • Support to Senior Engineers in scoping, planning, and estimating future activities

Whilst not considered a checklist, candidates would benefit from having the following:

  • An HNC/HND or Degree in Engineering (Mechanical / Aerospace / Automotive)

  • Significant design experience of complex machinery - Ideally supported by experience working with optical systems and/or vacuum technology

  • Significant practical engineering experience, ideally combined with the use and knowledge of machine tools

  • Extensive 3D modelling and detail drafting experience including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing - ideally using Siemens NX

  • A good understanding of mechanical engineering theory and practice, with a board knowledge of engineering design and manufacture

  • A good knowledge and experience of Project Management and delivery to Quality, Time, and Cost

  • A good knowledge of Quality Systems in a highly regulated industry

  • Good interpersonal skills, ability to work independently but also within a team, supporting colleagues to achieve the teams' goals

  • Strong communication skills (written and oral)

  • Strong organisational and problem-solving skills

Candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role.
