LSA - Mental Health and SEN
The Supply Room is working with brilliant and inclusive Specialist Schools in Southampton and surrounding areas, which are currently on the lookout for individuals who wish to gain further experience and training to work with the children in their care.
Specialist Schools deliver education to students who cannot attend mainstream school due to complex mental health difficulties and/or special educational needs. These roles will have a lot more focus on independence, emotional development, employability prospects, and functional skills in place of academic skills, especially compared to a mainstream setting.
Teaching Assistant Role:
* September 2022 Start Dates
* Full-time (Monday to Friday), Term-time only
* 08:30 - 15:30 (may vary depending on the school)
* Temp-perm and long-term contracts
* Positions in Southampton, Sarisbury Green, Totton, and Eastleigh
As a Teaching Assistant, you will have the opportunity to work with pupils on a 1-to-1 and small group basis. The young people who attend these schools will range in age from 11 to 16 years old - we also work with post-16 establishments - and have a wide range of Special Educational Needs: SEMH, Medical Needs, Specific Learning Difficulties, a diagnosis of Autism (ASD), and they cannot attend mainstream school. You will have the opportunity to work with the students in the classroom, in specialist mentoring sessions and in smaller group sessions, always supervised and guided by the specialist Class Teacher or Therapist. Some pupils will display more challenging behaviour and the school will be able to train you in suitable interventions and approaches, as well as proving an Education and Health Care Plan (EHCP) for you to follow with triggers to avoid/best practices. As part of the support team, you will work closely with the school's SENCO and senior management team, as well as outside agencies including therapists, physiotherapists, and healthcare professionals.
The schools are always eager to offer further training and guidance in the Psychology and Teaching realm and are known to be friendly, supportive, and are excellent places to work. Many of the schools also offer opportunities for permanent roles, as well as Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities for all their staff.
Who are we looking for?
* Completed a degree or in the process of completing a degree (English, Maths, Science, Psychology, etc.)
* Good academic background
* Prior experience working with young people is desirable but not necessary - i.e., Coaching, Tutoring, Nannying, TA, Youth Work, etc.
* Outgoing and supportive personality
