Newstaff employment services currently have an exciting oppotunity for an experienced Caretaker in the St Albans area.

Job Title: School Caretaker (non-residential)

Responsible to: Estates Manager

Overall Purpose of the Job:

• As part of the Estates Team provide a clean, safe and secure environment for users of the College buildings and grounds for students, staff, parents and visitors.
• To set up and clear down rooms and venues to facilitate college events, and external hire events
• ad hoc cleaning and all-round general maintenance.

Frequent working contact with:

Estates team, Bursar, Deputy Heads, Events Co-Ordinator, staff, contractors and visitors

Main Duties & Key Responsibilities:

Events (this may involve some evening and weekend work)
• in liaison with the Events Coordinator, the preparation set up and clear down of rooms for all college events and functions, e.g. Assemblies, Examinations, Parents evenings, Meetings, Concerts
• Security and clearing up duties and cover for school events

Site Security
• Responsible as part of the Estates Team for whole site security, reporting to the Estates Manager
• The postholder will be one of the college's key holders for call out and emergency access to the premises (on rota with members of the Estates Team)
• Unlocking buildings and grounds before school (only in the absence of the residential Caretaker)
• Securing of the College's buildings and grounds at the end of each day (only in the absence of the residential Caretaker)
• Assist the Estates Team with the testing of all school alarm and surveillance equipment as required
• Regularly inspect all points of entry, all entry control systems, locks and catches to external doors and windows to ensure in good working order and undertake simple maintenance as necessary
• Adhere to systems for the recording of keys and entry codes used throughout the College
• Emptying the confidential waste bins and safe storage of such waste prior to collection by contractors

General duties and routine maintenance
• Monitor daily standards of Health and safety
• To ensure that the fire equipment signage and fire escape notices are correctly displayed throughout the college.
• General porterage duties, including movement of furniture and equipment within the College
• Dealing with deliveries, distributing them around the school and storing equipment and supplies safely
• Liaise with contractors on site to ensure minimum disruption to the work of the College
• Ordering consumables, furniture and equipment as directed by the Estates Manager
• Handyperson duties which may include minor repairs to furniture and fixtures and non-specialist decorating tasks
• Assist as required at the start and end of the school day with traffic management

Cleaning
• Report to the Estates Manager (and rectify where necessary) all instances where cleaning falls below standards and methods set out in the contract cleaning specification
• General site cleanliness and up-keep of the site, including immediate outside areas, sweeping, litter clearance, refuse bins/areas, gullies and drains etc
• Clear and/or grit external areas of snow and ice to ensure the safety of students, staff and visitors between school buildings and around the site
• Cleaning of any designated area when cleaning staff are not in attendance to ensure that the College is kept in a clean and hygienic condition this may include vomit, blood, faeces and urine
• Assisting with day-to-day and periodic tidying of storage areas
• Assisting with recycling and disposal of the College's waste

Transport
• Assist with the management the College's own transport fleet
• Maintaining the school register for vehicle servicing
• Basic before and after use checks of the College minibuses
• Occasional driving of pupils and staff

General Expectations
• Undertake the duties of a Fire Marshal
• Monitor emails and the College Calendar to support events
• Assisting other site staff when necessary
• Treat students, parents, visitors and colleagues with courtesy at all times and provide a high level of customer service
• Comply with Health & Safety requirements, other relevant legislation and school policies
• To assist in carrying out risk assessments relating to site activities and premises related matters
• Identify potential hazards and remedy in a timely manner
• Any other tasks that may be reasonably directed by the Bursar or Estates Manager

Safeguarding Children
The appointee's responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom s/he comes into contact will be to adhere to and ensure compliance with the School's Child Protection Policy at all times and to attend relevant safeguarding update training including off job and online courses. If in the course of carrying out the duties of the post the appointee becomes aware of any actual or potential risk to the safety or welfare of children in the School s/he must report any concerns to the Designated Senior Leader.

• Working outside in extremes of temperature
• Use of potentially dangerous chemicals and equipment

• Moving and carrying furniture and other equipment e.g. desks, tables, chairs, carrying deliveries to wherever they are to be stored
• Due to the nature of the role, grounds staff are subject to a health assessment to ensure they are physically able to complete their duties

Additional Information

The Role
• Full time position, 52 weeks per annum, 25 days' annual holiday entitlement, 8 bank holidays plus 3 discretionary, non-contractual days between Christmas and New Year
• Full time salary will be GBP25,000 gross per annum dependent upon experience and qualifications
