HM Revenue & Customer (HMRC) along with Revenue & Customer Digital Technology Service (RCDTS) have embarked on an ambitious and challenging digital transformation programme which results in HMRC becoming one of the most digitally advanced tax authorities in the world. This role sits within Chief Digital & Information Group (CDIO), whose vision is to run a secure, flexible, and modern IT estate that enables innovation to meet changing policy needs and evolving customer and colleague expectations.

The Team
As part of CDIO, Enterprise Platform Services, Network Services are accountable for every aspect of the HMRC network including 100+ sites, 5 Data Centres, 2 Cloud providers and over 5000 network devices that make up the HMRC estate.
Within the Design Engineering Team in Network Services, we work closely with other areas of CDIO, the wider department and 3rd party suppliers to design and implement technical network solutions to enable the transformation of our network estate and to support the HMRC strategic goals.
Currently Network Services are embarking on a re-structure to become a product-based organisation and we're offering this exciting opportunity to join our Design Engineering team as we move forward on our transformational journey.
The Role
Working within a secure HMRC network environment as a highly skilled Network Design Engineer, you will be proficient in providing consultancy, low level designs and carrying out implementation activities as part of project deliveries. (The role is aligned in the DDaT Framework as Technical / Network Architect)
You will work closely with project teams on a variety of projects taking information from initial customer proposals/specifications and turning them into completed design documentation.
You will be responsible for the implementation of configuration changes across the different types of network devices deployed across the HMRC estate based on approved design documentation and overarching architectural guidelines.
You will contribute to a culture of Continuous Improvement, supported by centrally published product definitions, metrics, and dependencies, operating in a proactive, agile way.
The ideal candidate
As the ideal candidate you will have experience of Low-Level design & discovery work as well as implementation activities, based on approved and scheduled changes.
You will be proficient in engaging and maintaining positive relationships with programme/project teams, other Government departments and 3rd party suppliers, providing technical input at review meetings/workshops.

Engage and maintain positive relationships with programme/project teams, including OGDs and 3rd party suppliers. Providing technical input at review meetings/workshops.
Deliver to challenging timescales and managing priorities
Demonstrate a continuous improvement mind set and supporting an on-going cycle of process improvement and best practice
Share and pass on knowledge/experience of relevant networking products/services/technologies.
Actively help with development of other team members where possible
Essential criteria
The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate good working knowledge of Networking technologies and one or more of the following Professional qualifications/certifications.
Advanced Cisco Certifications (or equivalent provider)
CCNA
CCNP
CCSA
CISP
Advanced Aruba Certifications
Advanced Cloud Certifications
This role requires the successful candidate to have a current and valid SC Clearance as a minimum or willingness to obtain.
Desirable Criteria
Good knowledge of the following:
Traditional Network topology
Routing protocols, particularly BGP and OSPF
Firewalls including Fortinet, Checkpoint, and Cisco ASA
Data Centre topology
Cisco hardware including switches, routers and load-balancers
Advanced Cloud Networking including Azure, AWS and Infrastructure as Code (IAC)
