Kelly Services have an immediate permanent vacancy for an experienced Materials Engineer / Physicist. We are keen to speak with talented individuals.

Our client plays a leading role in formulating fuse standards and specifications through its membership of the relevant committees of BSI, IEC, CENELEC, and other standards organisations. The company has sponsored and participated in many research and development programmes.

This role is working 37 hours from Monday-Friday.

Key Responsibilities:

The role is key to the R&D department and is a new specialised position to enable the science of fuse characteristics to be fully understood to assist the design of new products.

The role will be required to actively participate in research, design, and development of a series of fuse-links, fuse holders and ancillary equipment to add to the product portfolio of the company. Initial training will be given but you will be expected to be proactive in self-learning.

Leading the research into all materials used within fuse design and manufacture and producing detailed reports and white papers to aid the design process.
Analysis of diffusion techniques of various alloys with copper to reduce the melting point of copper elements, thermal performances of different materials such as copper, brass, and ceramic.
Analysis of the life cycle of a fuse including all aspects of fuse operation and fuse non-operation.
Development / use of a complex mathematical model to enable a software generated simulation of a real type testing test and short circuit current tests and analysis of data produced. The target will be to produce a model that will reduce the requirement for physical testing.
Selection of the best combination of materials for specific purposes.
Testing of materials to assess characteristics regarding heat transfer, electrical conductivity, melting points, diffusion processes, strength.
Assisting with prototype development.
Consideration of all Governmental polices as well as fuse standard requirements, including recycling and environmental issues.
Reviewing current materials used to investigate cost downs and alternative materials which will keep the components within the desired criteria.
Assistance with generation of data sheets.
Assisting in ensuring all testing and activities within the laboratory are performed with full recourse to the certification and all health and safety guidelines. The laboratory is accredited to ISO 17025 and is ASTA (Association of Short Circuit Test Authorities) approved.
Producing ISO 17025 reports to accurately demonstrate all findings from any research taking, drawings scientific conclusions from test data. This will be part of the adherence to the Lawson Fuses StageGate procedure to control all projects.
Establishing and maintaining relationships with 3rd parties/vendors and actively source relevant material with best terms and conditions to be able to hand over the whole project to Operations, Purchasing and Quality Departments.

Experience:

HNC or Higher in Materials Science / Mathematics.
Reasonable experience in an industrial research environment.
General understanding of electrical circuits, electromagnetics, heat transfer, materials science, mechanical engineering, plasma physics and numerical methods.
A good understanding of the full life cycle of products from concept to product release and ongoing support, along with all the problem-solving techniques that will be required along the way.
Experience of mathematic modelling, either ANSYS, similar or generation of own models.
Knowledge of IEC standards and ability to understand scientific requirements.
Commercial Awareness.
Capability to research a subject, verify the results and then validate the solution within the final component complies to all specification requirements.
A good knowledge of fuse standards and standards in general will be required or a deep interest and willingness to become expert in all necessary standards that apply to our business. These are currently the IEC 60269 range of standards (Part one to Part 7, covering Industrial, household, semiconductor, Photovoltaic and Battery protection fuses).
A sound understanding of fuse operation and the impact of developing safety critical components is required with a working knowledge of current regulations and the certification process.
