Based in the North East

IPPR North – the leading think-tank for the North of England – is recruiting a Senior Research Fellow to join the team. IPPR North has an office in Manchester and a presence in the North East of England, where this role will be based.

Our vision is a North, and regions like it, that has realised its economic, social and democratic potential. It is a future in which regional inequalities no longer exist as they do today, and opportunity and prosperity are available to all people regardless of background or place of birth. To help realise our vision, we undertake research, publish reports, convene people and events and provide fresh perspectives with which to explore the challenges and opportunities for the North of England and beyond. We need your ideas and creativity to help us develop the bold ideas and strategies for change that will realise our vision.

To be successful as the Senior Research Fellow you be an experienced researcher and will be able to fundraise for research projects. You will have a strong understanding of the policy-making process and regional economics in the North and other regions like it, and awareness and interest in relevant current policy debates such as levelling up and devolution.

Based in and leading our work in the North East, you will have a very good understanding of the region, including its geography and governance. Expertise in regional policy or economics is welcome. You will be willing to work across a range of projects and policy themes as part of a friendly and ambitious team. You will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, be able to manage a varied workload to meet deadlines and have a clear commitment to the ethos of IPPR.

By joining us you will have a chance to help shape future economic and social policy for the North and regions like it.

IPPR is committed to equality of opportunity and welcomes applications from all sections of the community, and from applicants with a range of professional and lived experiences. As an organisation engaging in critical debate about a wide range of progressive policy issues, we value the creativity and range of perspectives that a diverse team can provide.

As part of our commitment to flexible working we will consider a range of options for the successful applicant to fill the post, including job-share or part-time working, as well as part-remote working. All options can be discussed at interview stage.

The ordinary place of work for this post is in North East England; we are open-minded as to where in the North East region you are based, though the role will require some travel to Newcastle and monthly travel to Manchester.
