Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Non-Destructive Evaluation Research and Development Engineer in Rolls-Royce Derby.

You will be an integral part of our non-destructive testing group. As part of this team, you will help us to provide a comprehensive range of integrated surface inspection, non-destructive examination (NDE) and condition monitoring services for all phases of the nuclear reactor lifecycle.

Working closely with other development teams within the Inspection, Maintenance and Repair Services (IMRS) department, the NDE Research team is responsible for the identification, development, and transfer of new and improved technologies into IMRS and the wider Submarines business.

Our current activities involve:

  • Development of bespoke software for ultrasonic finite element simulations
  • Development of permanently installed ultrasonic monitoring systems
  • Deployment of new phased array inspection techniques onto the nuclear plant
  • Development of guidance material to support justification of high integrity inspections
  • Design and support of high integrity inspection development and qualification

Project work ranges from research and development of solutions within IMRS to project management and technical oversight of subcontracted tasks (both commercial companies and academic institutions), and leadership of tasks being conducted by doctoral students (including their supervision). There are often opportunities to attend national and international conferences and there is also strong support for engineers working toward chartership. You will also be supported to obtain relevant practical NDE qualifications.

Our nuclear business is a leader in propulsion system design and development for the Royal Navy's nuclear submarine fleet and the sole provider and technical authority, managing all aspects of plant design, safety, manufacture, performance and through-life support

Key accountabilities:

  • Technical leadership of one or more projects, including planning and budgeting.
  • Delivery of projects to time, cost, and quality.
  • Production of technical reports, presentation of your work, and dissemination of key results to stakeholders across the company.

Qualifications and experience:

  • A degree in physics, mechanical engineering, or another relevant STEM discipline.
  • The ability to produce clear, concise, and accurate technical reports.
  • The ability to work in a highly technical environment, in multidisciplinary teams and to tight deadlines.
  • You will be enthusiastic about research and development and will be comfortable undertaking a range of tasks including those requiring modelling and coding.

Desirable:

  • A postgraduate level research degree. NDE or related modelling experience. This could include explicit finite element codes or commercial NDE software (e.g. CIVA).
  • Software development experience or a strong familiarity with a high-level scripting language (e.g. MATLAB or Python).
  • Experience of conducting experiments and trials in a lab environment.
  • Experience of NDE techniques or detection and imaging techniques in other fields

To work for the Rolls-Royce Submarines Business an individual has to hold a minimum of an Security Check (SC) clearance without any caveats to that clearance. Rolls-Royce will support the application for Security Clearance if the individual does not currently already have this in place.
