About the role

Babcock is rapidly establishing itself as an international Naval ship designer and builder. We have built on the success of the UK MoD Type 31 Frigate, and are pursuing opportunities for frigate export variants (AH140) with overseas customers. As well as supporting frigate exports, the engineering team is actively working on other complex shipbuilding programs around the world, from small fast attack craft all the way up to aircraft carriers, alongside our established in service support contracts for UK and overseas customers.

You will join a national team of over 700 Engineers and Designers within the Marine Sector of Babcock. We are a leading design consultancy providing naval architecture, marine system engineering, electrical engineering, design modelling and project support services to the marine and defence markets. We have base offices in Bristol, Rosyth or Plymouth, and offer flexible working with office attendance and travel to meet project requirements.

The role is within our complex shipbuilding programme, developing designs through concept and early stage design as well as supporting the bidding process.

As a Senior Marine Structures Engineer, you will be responsible for determination of local and global loads (Still Water Bending Moment, Wave Bending Moment and Shear Forces), scantlings (including midship section and other critical sections) and hull girder strength from classification societies' rules and regulations.

You will be responsible for design and substantiation of Category A/B equipment seatings and foundations to meet military and commercial requirements. Preparation and checking of specifications, technical reports and substantiation calculations. As well as liaising with design teams, production teams, classification society representatives and other stakeholders (including supporting design reviews).

You will contribute towards the development of innovative design solutions and processes. The implementation of health, safety and environmental requirements. In addition, the maintenance and improvement in quantity standards of outputs.

In addition, you will belong to the wider engineering capability group and will have the opportunity to support other projects in different roles within your discipline with a focus on longer term career development.

What do I need to do the role?

You will be required to demonstrate proven experience in the marine industry with classification society plan appraisal experience being advantageous. You will have experience or whole ship design and working with classification societies (Lloyd's Register/DNV/ABS).

Ideally, you will be Degree qualified but HND/HNC level qualification in naval architecture or marine engineering with extensive experience in relevant field will be considered. Ideally, you will be a member of a relevant institution (e.g. RINA, IET, IMechE, IMarEst etc.) and either hold Chartered Engineer status or working towards.

What else do I need to know?

You will work 36/37 hours per week Monday to Friday. Our teams are currently working from home with a future agile working approach for 2/3 days onsite per week in Bristol, Rosyth or Plymouth. Lastly, you must be able to achieve the appropriate level of Security Clearance for this position.
