Suffolk County Council has an exciting opportunity available for a Highways Insurance Claims Officer to join our team based in Ipswich. You will join us on a full-time, permanentbasis (part time working may be considered for this role) and in return, you will receive a competitive salary of GBP18,933 per annum (pro rata for part time).

As our Highways Insurance Claims Officer, you will:

  • Process insurance claims by the public against Suffolk Highways and those generated by Suffolk Highways against third parties, by gathering and collating relevant information to enable the county council's Insurance Team or the Highway Services Contract service provider's insurance representatives to refute, settle and/or recover costs for such claims; in a timely and cost-effective way
  • Take responsibility for your own personal development, motivation, performance, behaviour, health, safety, and general wellbeing through the application of appropriate policies, procedures, and management techniques.

Your responsibilities as our Highways Insurance Claims Officerwill include:

  • Acting as a contact for the receipt of claims from the public against any activity undertaken by Suffolk Highways in its maintenance and improvement of all highway infrastructure assets that comprise the local highway network
  • Instigating the recording and investigation of third-party claims and accumulate, organise, and record claim details in accordance with the current approved process
  • Administering all business processes and procedures associated with handling the third-party insurance claim
  • Working collaboratively with other highway services to monitor the quality of investigations, gain missing information and promote improvements to support the council's liability defence
  • Investigating and presenting a robust case to recover costs that the council has suffered after accidents and damages on and to the highway. Taking financial control and issuing payment invoices

Requirements needed to become our Highways Insurance Claims Officer:

  • An acute eye for detail and an investigative mind to interpret what has occurred and what actions have been taken following an incident
  • A focus and desire to understand customers need and provide a high level of customer service
  • Good working knowledge of software systems such as MS Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, PowerPoint, Insight and Works Manager with highly proficient and accurate keyboard skills for producing reports and letters, as well as entering data onto databases and spreadsheets, and taking notes at meetings
  • Demonstrable understanding of confidentiality and data protection requirements in the workplace.

The team

Our team consists of three Highways Insurance Claims Officers and a line manager who all work collaboratively in an open and honest environment. Each case is varied with numerous challenges, in which each team member gains knowledge through peer learning to support and encourage service improvements both within the team and other departments.
