Assistant System Design Engineer (Telecoms)

Based Warwick

Great development opportunity for an Engineer with any Railway Telecoms experience (e.g. installation, testing, commissioning, site surveying etc) to train and develop a career as a Designer within Railway Operational Communications systems. You will be based in our Warwick office with occasional visits required to Rail / Metro sites.

The role:

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, in this design entry-level position you will learn a variety of design aspects for various Operational Communications systems (including safety critical systems) covering Transmission Systems (SDH and PDH), Telephone Concentrators / PABXs, Cable Networks (Fibre, Copper, CAT 5/6 Structured), Trackside and Crossing Operational telephones and some IP Networking (Cisco systems). Working as part of a multi-skilled technical team, you will work closely with established System Design Engineers to learn all aspects of designing telecommunication systems for projects within the UK Mainline Rail and Metro.

Responsibilities will include:

Assisting with carrying out site surveys at Rail and Metro sites as per project requirements
Assisting in the creation of design packs which may include schematics, drawings, reports and Bill of Materials
Input into the Designers Risk Register recording hazards and mitigations.
Assist in ensuring conformity to industry and railway standards as well as verify the deliverables against all contractual requirements.Skills, experience, and qualifications required:

Strong preference for candidates to have some workplace experience in the Telecoms Railway field (position may suit someone who has completed a graduate or apprenticeship scheme within this area or an engineer with experience of installation, testing, commissioning or site surveying etc)
Strong desire to develop a career within systems design with the ability and willingness to learn
HNC/HND, B.Eng degree (or equivalent) in any engineering discipline with Electrical, Electronic, Telecoms or Systems as the core discipline.
IT literate, with experience on MS Office applications.
Effective communication skills (both written and verbal)
Ability to work closely with others in the implementation of project deliverables
Ability to work within a team and on lone tasks
Strong attention to detail even with short timescales
