As part of the Staffordshire Digital Innovation Partnerships project, Staffordshire University has entered into a partnership with SAS Water, an industry leading legionella control company based in Staffordshire. We are recruiting a graduate / undergraduate to take on a 24-week project. The project will support the development of an innovative water monitoring device that uses internet of things principles and low powered network capabilities to monitor water safety. You will be working collaboratively with an electronics specialist to design and develop a device and create a cloud-based prototype monitoring tool. Your project will focus on the development of the software and network infrastructure. This is an excellent opportunity for someone to join an exciting business embarking on a highly innovative project. Supported by University experts, you will research, analyse, plan and implement a prototype solution that can be used as a proof of concept by the company.

Duties and responsibilities

* Work with internal stakeholders to create a requirements document for the monitoring solution.

* Work with electronics expert to design the network interfaces of the monitoring solution

* .Design and create a scalable web-based application to collect and analyse data sent from the monitoring device.

Including:

* Network infrastructure

* Back end infrastructure : API development , Data structure design and implementation

* Environment testing and product viability

* Customer / staff training

Skills and experience

* IT/Computing undergraduate or graduate - computer science background is preferable.

* Software engineering skills are essential, preferably with experience of developing web-based applications.

* Understanding of network topologies.

* Experience of network design would be advantageous.

* Strong communication skills, being able to work as part of a team and as an individual.

* Energy and enthusiasm, determination to succeed

* Good organisational skill and focused, problem-solving ability.

* Prepared to fully participate in the commitment of the company to achieving the goals of the project.

* Interest in and passion for new product design and in particular developing computer based automatic testing

* Approachable with a positive attitude and willingness to seek help when required

The position is offered on a full time, fixed term contract for six months (24 weeks)
