Senior PR and external communications officer (maternity cover of 7 months to start ASAP)

We're looking for a friendly, proactive and creative member of the team to hit the ground running as a maternity cover in a busy Communications and Corporate Affairs team.

The role will work flexibly, with a mix of home and office/site (safety permitting) working anticipated. The post holder will be responsible for delivering effective communications to a range of audiences through various owned and earned channels, including web and social media.

They will work with team members with a strategic approach to delivering communications support for the business, alongside delivery of daily activities that enhance Tarmac's reputation and support its key business priorities.

Role summary:

Proactively identify and deliver thought leadership and other communications that differentiate Tarmac and support it in delivering its strategy and long-term vision

Support improvements in regional and wider media profile of the company in line with the external affairs strategy targets

Act as business contact for defined business units. Be confident advising leadership teams and other stakeholders on effective communications to meet their objectives and demonstrate measurable results

Build and own relationships with key internal and external stakeholders. Maintain great relationships with key parts of Tarmac

Manage positive relationships with communications teams within key customers and partner organisations

Maintain an awareness and understanding of wider industry landscape and topics relevant to Tarmac's objectives to identify opportunities and issues

Work with the wider External Affairs team to drive creativity and inhouse PR delivery

Support the delivery and development of social media channels and content

Create/publish content on Tarmac's website aligned to Tarmac goals

Work effectively as part of the wider Communications & Corporate Affairs team to ensure alignment and integration on activity, optimising use of content and identifying new opportunities

Deliver measurement and continuous improvement in all communications activities

Manage reactive media enquiries in a timely fashion, ensuring approvals from all relevant internal and external stakeholders and protecting Tarmac's reputation

Take part in the 24-hour cover on a rota - including the press office mobile and social media monitoring and response. Handle incoming media enquiries, issues and crisis management, and to ensure escalation is managed in an appropriate and timely manner

Play an active role in the development of Tarmac's corporate reputation in UK and support corporate media activity

Confidently handle potential issues where Tarmac may be portrayed unfavourably in the media, including appropriate escalation where required (including to parent company)

Advise internal stakeholders on media relations tactics, messaging and positioning to support Tarmac's reputation.

Knowledge and skills:

* Quick to understand industry issues and ability to assess potential reputational impact/opportunities

* Experience of developing and delivering strategic media and communications campaigns

* Understanding of third-party press offices and wider communication protocols

* Experience of supporting and delivering response to crisis issues

* Experience in a busy press office

* Interest in external communications and reputation management

* Excellent written English and attention to detail

* Copywriting, proofing, editing (photo/video/text)

* Digital PR experience, including impactful social media content activity
