Project Engineer

Would you like to play a key role delivering critical improvements to the Type 45 Destroyers? We currently have a vacancy for a Project Engineer at Portsmouth Naval Base and Birkenhead.

As a Project Engineer, you will be working as part of the Power Improvement Project (PIP) for the six Type 45 destroyers, in collaboration with our embodiment partner Cammell Laird. The project is now in its embodiment phase with ship 1 entering test and trials and ship 2 due to arrive into Cammell Laird's yard later this year. You will be required to liaise with wider project stakeholders to ensure processes have been followed and documentation required to support embodiment, test, commissioning and acceptance has been produced.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to support a very high-profile project within the business and the wider maritime community. You will also have the opportunity to take part in sea trials. In terms of future career progression, there will be opportunities to develop and take on additional responsibility within more senior engineering roles.

This role will require weekly travel or temporary relocation to Birkenhead, after which time you will return to Portsmouth Naval Base to resume your role. Travel and accommodation costs for this travel are included.

Your main responsibilities as a Project Engineer will involve:

Co-ordination of acceptance evidence for contracted requirements through the Verification Cross Reference Matrices (VCRM) in order to achieve acceptance off contract including the facilitation of acceptance through Authority and Alliance led working groups
Definition of the qualification obligations for the assurance hold points during build, test & commissioning, and providing assurance to the Design Authority as to the adequacy and robustness of the Safety Case and supporting documentation
Appropriate flow down of requirements to Cammell Laird and supporting as necessary to ensure understanding of contracted requirements
Resolving a range of systems engineering issues and problems, compiling technical reports and presentations as necessary
Assisting with Test and Commissioning activity
Providing realistic systems engineering status, identifying issues and implementing agreed recovery plans as necessary
Undertaking peer review or checking/verification of tasks as directed
Systems Engineering planning activity
Reviewing proposed changes during embodiment phase to assess impact on contracted requirements
Making decisions within own sphere of responsibility and delegated authority

Your skills and qualifications as a Project Engineer:

Essential:

Must be willing to travel each week or temporary relocation to Birkenhead

Good understanding/ experience of test and trials programmes

Degree, or equivalent qualification or experience in engineering

Desirable:

Appreciation of systems engineering and requirements management

Defence industry experience
