Howdens Joinery are looking for a Group Leader (First Line Manager) to join us at our site, Howdens Work Surfaces, based in Holme Upon Spalding Moor in East Riding of Yorkshire. An excellent communicator, you will need to be a confident decision maker with a proven track record of implementing continuous improvement into a manufacturing environment. As a FTSE250 business that is undergoing an exciting period of growth, this position offers you a unique opportunity to be part of our new factory operation, Howdens Work Surfaces as we set up and build the site team to manufacture bespoke stone worktops in 2021.



As a Group Leader (First Line Manager), you are the first line of leadership for our manufacturing teams. In your role, you will be deputising for senior site management and be accountable for ensuring production targets are met whilst adhering to the required Quality, Cost, Delivery, People, Health and Safety metrics. You need to, therefore, be organised and have excellent people management and relationship skills to be successful within this role.


Reporting to the Operations Manager, you will be accountable for the performance management of multiple production lines, dispatch and yard process areas as well as planning, co-ordinating and monitoring the receipt, storage and dispatch of goods. In your role, you will complete risk assessments, ensuring visual management boards are up to date and facilitate Continuous Improvement workshops including root causes analysis and corrective action process.


Utilising your excellent people management experience to manage your teams, you will be producing the weekly labour plan, ensuring the skills matrix and training needs analysis is up to date, carrying out first level people meetings and investigations, updating the timekeeping and attendance system as well as the tracking and performance of agency staff.


Knowledge and Experience Required:



  • Experience of Hard Surface based manufacturing products would be an advantage but is not essential.
  • Demonstrable experience of working in a leadership role within manufacturing and dispatch environments.
  • Proven track record of implementing continuous improvement into manufacturing and dispatch environments.
  • Knowledge and experience of manufacturing KPI's and quality control plans
  • Experience of financial management within manufacturing and dispatch environments.
  • Experience of applying health and safety within fast paced manufacturing environments
  • Experience of working with and applying HR procedures.
