Manufacturing Engineer
Location: Malvern, UK
to GBP46,000 + benefits

In this role you will be part of a team of empowered multi-disciplined engineers to take responsibility for the manufacturability of current and new products to ensuring that the Operations quality, delivery, and cost targets are achieved.
Responsibilities:
- Production/Materials support: Ensure that all engineering problems are resolved to achieve Production/Materials customer delivery dates and targets.
- Ensure that product is built and tested to Build Standard.
- Manage the cut-in of Engineering Changes to Production/Materials
- Resolve immediate product technical problems with R&D.
- Work with suppliers on quality/process capability problems
- Identify and resolve any Health and Safety problems in Production.
- Optics: Cross technology optical production support (Training given on requirement)
o Design alignment and test procedures to ensure designed system performance can be quickly and reliably achieved.
o Design tooling and equipment to allow optical alignment to be carried out.
o Review and advise on optical mounting and adjustment systems for new products.
o Use knowledge of optical fabrication and coating methods to help optical designers achieve more robust designs that are cheaper and easier to make.
o Redesign optical mounting and adjustment systems where problems arise in existing products.
o Analyse optical and mechanical tolerances to ensure system performance can be maintained despite component and alignment variation.
o Review component and assembly drawings to ensure all critical performance features are controlled.
o Liaise with Development Scientists to identify critical performance features for each optical component.
o Measure and test optical components to ensure they are within specification when manufacturing problems arise.
o Design bespoke test rigs to control critical performance features which cannot be readily measured with standard equipment.
o Transition component control from bespoke test rigs to standard test equipment.
o Develop and maintain an optical metrology facility to diagnose component problems.
- Lean manufacture methods: Ensure the implementation of lean manufacture methods and practices including;
- Design for Manufacture/Assembly (DFMA) and Failure mode and effects Analysis (FMEA)
- Accelerated Life test, for critical parts and assemblies.
- Six sigma/statistical process control methodologies
- Cell layout, manufacturing process and workstation design
- Materials flows, Kanban and pull systems.
- Quality: Take responsibility for the quality of the product shipped and other Continuous Improvement activities.
- Monitor and improve the level of build/test quality of product.
- Manage the Quality Notification reporting process and teams.
- Ensure that all test data is appropriately archived for retrieval on group systems.
- Ensure the robustness of all transferred manufacturing processes.
- General:
o Any other reasonable duties which may be required to meet the needs of the business which are in the spirit and scope of the role.
- Support and follow company procedures and processes.
- To respond to production problems in a timely manner
- To take advantage of staff development opportunities and periodic performance reviews in accordance with terms and conditions specified by the company.
- To assist in the day-to-day administrative duties as appropriate and to produce written reports and financial records as requested.
