Biggleswade depot
We're looking for experienced and people-focused transport shift manager to help us stand up our new, state of the art distribution centre in Biggleswade.
Opening in January 2022, Biggleswade will be our flagship depot in the heart of Bedfordshire; the biggest, most sustainable and high-tech regional distribution centre in our network.
Working closely with the transport operations manager and other key partners, you'll manage all aspects of the transport operation on a particular shift, delivering a customer-first culture, including leading, developing and engaging a multi-skilled team of up to 150 indirect and direct reports. It's a big job. But if you can bring us the transport management experience we need, we can offer you the chance to develop your skills, build a career and help shape the future of this brand-new depot.

What you'll do:
• take ownership of the day to day running of the shift, managing 4-5 team managers and up to 150 transport colleagues per shift
• inspire, engage and coach your team to be highly efficient within the transport operation
• create an inclusive, engaging and continuous improvement culture across all areas of the operation
• monitor teams are consistently hitting targets; identifying and removing barriers
• develop and build positive relationships with a range of key business partners
• drive transport standards, ensure adherence to our procedures and policies and offer a supportive presence within the transport arena
• identify areas to improve processes within your team and the wider transport operation
• ensure transport legal compliance across the site

This role would suit people who have:
• previous transport experience with a thorough understanding of transport legislation
• strong people leadership skills and experience of managing a sizeable team, focusing on performance management
• a passion for supporting, engaging and developing others; you know how to get the best out of your colleagues
• the ability to lead and deliver change in a fast-paced environment
• strong relationship management experience with the ability to communicate and collaborate with people at all levels
• a strategic approach, always thinking about continuous improvements and ways of working
• strong transport operating systems knowledge and experience
• proven experience of building relationships and working in a unionised environment
• transport management CPC would be an advantage

Why Co-op?

As a Co-op colleague you'll do work that matters in an organisation where principles are just as important as profits. You'll also get a package that includes:
• a competitive salary
• private health cover
• an annual incentive scheme
• 28 days holiday
• discounts on Co-op products and services
• a pension with up to 10% employer contributions

Building an inclusive workplace
We're actively building diverse teams and welcome applications from everyone. But simply having a diverse workforce is not enough. We want to create an inclusive environment, where everyone can contribute their best work and develop to their full potential. We celebrate our differences, and recognise the importance of our teams reflecting the communities they serve.
We can make reasonable adjustments to our interview process according to your needs. And we offer a flexible working environment so you can adjust your hours to suit your personal circumstances. You can find out more about Co-op people policies at coop.co.uk/peoplepolicies.
As part of your application you'll need to complete an online assessment. It will take you around 12 minutes to complete this test.
