Exciting opportunity to join our highly successful SEN team and work with our SENCO to develop this new role!

Do you have at least two years' experience of working as a Teaching Assistant in a Primary School setting? Do you have a passion and enthusiasm for inclusion and for making a difference to pupils with SEN? Are you organised, with excellent communication skills and a good standard of written English? If so, this may be the ideal position for you!

The SENCO Assistant is a new post and you will work closely with our Assistant Head of School/ SENCO to develop the role and ensure that children's needs are being identified and met. The right candidate will have a passion for inclusion and equality of opportunity for all pupils. They will have integrity and a willingness to challenge others to ensure that provision is maintained for pupils, a willingness to learn and the flexibility to adapt as the role develops.

Candidates must have:

  • A good standard of general education (i.e. minimum NVQ 3/ A levels or equivalent) together with excellent English and Maths skills (i.e. 5 GCSE grades C or equivalent).
  • Good numeracy and literacy skills, with a strong command of written and spoken English
  • Ability to organise workload and to prioritise effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to relate equally well to children, parents and professionals in different contexts, understanding needs and being able to respond accordingly.
  • Good IT Skills with a willingness and confidence to learn new packages specific to SEN.
  • Plan and lead training for members of the staff team both face to face and remotely as required.
  • Good understanding and experience of the broad range of SEND and awareness of what can be implemented to adapt provision to meet individual needs
  • A willingness to undertake further professional development to develop knowledge of different areas of SEND and appropriate provision.

Main purpose of the job

  • To provide administrative and organisational support to the SENCO
  • To promote the inclusion of all pupils, ensuring they have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop
  • To work with staff, pupils and parents to identify any additional needs and ensure appropriate support and provision is in place
  • To support pupils in a range of contexts including their academic as well as social development, covering playtime duty/ first aid/ intervention groups/ class TA cover where required.
  • To assist the teaching team in creating and maintaining a positive, purposeful and supportive learning climate
  • To promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young people within the school 8.45 to 3.00, 28.75 hours a week, term time only.

This is a permanent post. Whilst the role is predominantly non-class based, there will be regular opportunities to work with children across the school.
