Summary

We are offering a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Archaeologist to join our collaborative Consultancy team based out of either of our Hubs at Micheldever, Hampshire or Wisley, Surrey. Whereas one of our Hubs will be your base location a lot of your time will be spent at the properties you will support and we are also open to home-based working when you're not at property.


As an established Archaeologist you will be expected to provide advice and expertise in all aspects of the care, interpretation and presentation of historic landscapes, monuments and buildings to support National Trust properties across the scenic Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and West Oxon portfolio.


You will champion the historic environment from stately homes and designed landscapes, to multi-period Scheduled Monuments and extensive areas of land in the care of the National Trust.


Salary: GBP20,036 per annum (this salary is prorated to part time hours)

Hours: 18.75 hours per week

Contract: 18 month fixed term contract with the possibility to extend the contract

What you'll be doing

You will provide a consultancy service in archaeology which will include responding to requests for information, advice and hands-on support to meet the needs and demands of your clients. You will contribute to strategic plans, identifying archaeological opportunities, needs and resources required to deliver property objectives and improve the condition of heritage assets.


You will recommend, commission and supervise specialist contractors undertaking archaeological work on behalf of the National Trust. You will provide expert advice to ensure projects are completed to an appropriate professional standard and any impacts on the historic environment are mitigated.


As a strong communicator, you will champion the work of the National Trust in archaeology externally, building partnerships, identifying funding opportunities and inspiring people in order to raise the organisation's profile with existing and new audiences. You will coach, train and mentor professional teams including property staff and volunteers to enhance skills and build capability and understanding in the care of the historic environment.

You're an archaeology professional with a passion for your subject. In order to be successful in this role, you'll need to have:

  • A thorough knowledge of archaeological care, interpretation and presentation of landscapes, historic places and buildings
  • A customer focused approach and the ability to easily enthuse others to share your passion Up to date knowledge of any innovations in the profession, and the skills to put them into practice
  • Up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation, current issues policy, practice and guidance
  • The ability, know-how and enthusiasm to influence and negotiate
  • Excellent people skills, to enable you to work well with our consultancy team, property teams and interest groups
  • Enthusiasm and deep rooted knowledge, you're always ready to share your knowledge and experience
  • The ability to be a brilliant champion for our archaeological and historic landscapes across this diverse landscape
